I am working on a system that will automatically populate a WordPress site with thousands of pages of content. I setup a test of this system on a subdomain and forgot to set WP to private. The content I used for this test was nonsense that I took from two other sites I've been working on. When I went to check how one of those other sites is ranking (it's a new site, not WP, with 140K pages so Google has not indexed everything yet) I discovered that my completely not optimized test site was ranking #1 and #2!

Granted the keyword was not at all competitive, but my site was so bad it should not have ranked at all! The page ranked #1 at least had a matching title tag, but the page ranked #2 had a title tag of "Test | Page 6".

My best guess is that WP automatically pinged the pages when they were created.

Anyone have any thoughts? Just luck or does Google really love WP sites?

Nice outcome. As an SEO beginner I would love to read some pertinent opinions.

I am sure this will clear things up. ;)

All kidding aside, Google's robots index things, and that is their job. As long as you make your site structure favorable for them to crawl your site. You will get your pages indexed quickly. A manual review might be triggered, but certainly these kind of results can and do happen all the time.

Google tends to like wp sites a lot mainly because they are easily indexed and the fact that they are "user friendly" which is a big deal for google. Google normally believes that the people who have information are not necessarily web savvy and because WP is one of the most used CMS's they tend to rank a wp higher then most. However, because you just started with the SEO, or lack there of, you are going to be dancing for a while, like every new website. In addition with the google and panda updates, content refresh is always a big concern and should be looked at. Well that is my knowledge, hope it helps.

Great point about the SERPs dancing. I teach SEO to university students. They always get really excited when their sites ranks, but then panic a few days later when it drops. I tell them to just keep doing what they have been. Sure enough a few more days or a week goes by and the site is ranking again.

As for my site, it was just a test and the ranking pages don't even exist anymore. I'll monitor to see how long Google keeps them in the SERPs.
 
The keyphrase competition was about 100K (broad). So not competitive, but also not something with like 100 competition. No backlinks, not title tag, no real content on the page except for the keyphrase in a nonsense sentence.
 
Don't know about the others but I don't think Google loves WP. But they don't hate them :)
WP is very updated CMS. and their SEO is really appreciative.
 
you can rank with "no backlinks" as long as your internal link structure is there. Based on how much content was said that he had on the site, he could rank himself just by having the links interdispersed througout the entire site. Those internal links also count as "backlinks"

There was only one internal link to the page that ranked and 3 sentences of gibberish content (that included the keyphrase). The pages are still ranking.
 
Yes.. No doubt Google loves wordpress blog... although content and seo is also very important..
 
Google always did love wordpress. But I think you got lucky there too. With absolutely no backlinks you managed to get them ranked in page 1.
 
Google doesn't love all wordpress blogs. It can choose exception in my opinion. If I'm not mistaken, approximate 6.000.000 web site using the wordpress. Wordpress is successful but not exception for google.
 
I was wondering if you're going to be selling this system, the one to populate the word press blog content. And if so I would definitely be interested in purchasing, depending on the price.

Right now I'm not selling the code. But I am selling it as a service to some of my clients. I already have it perfected for HTML sites and have just completed the coding for WordPress. PM me if you want me to set one up for you and we can discuss details.
 
You teach SEO as a class? Any blackhat lesson plans? Perhaps CPA campaigns and E-Whoring 101?

The SEO component is part of a larger class in which students research and build their own affiliate site. They then work to get their site ranked. I focus primarily on white hat approaches, but at the end do talk about some BH techniques.
