Why try and rank higher than places? Ranking Google places is usually easier, in my opinion, than ranking regular SEO. It's a whole different beast, a lot less links to be built, but you need different kind of strategies to boost up your rankings such as Google Maps and citations.
Tried over a 100 citations and building many maps with ZERO ranking improvements. So frustrating. Seems like reviews are the way to go but they never go live. I wonder if they need to be from Google accounts that are socially active? Any other ideas on what's working lately?
