I am looking to do SEO for this company which is paying me to do the work. The keyword is competitive but the amount of searches is not too big, let's say

    1000 exact
    3000 phrase
    6000 global

They are dentists. When I type the major keywords in google, there are a lot of dentist businesses which appear on top with a map of the local area.

Is it possible to top these businesses? They have reviews and stuff..

I am asking this because I don't want to promiss them anything like that if it is not feasable.

    thank you

Yes, get HIGH PR backlinks, write fake reviews (even if you write a 1-star review it will still increase the rank). When you write a fake review throw in as many keywords as you can. What city?

Why would you want to rank for a keyword with low searches?
Isn't that just SEO for the sake of it and defeats the purpose?

1000 is a ridiculous amount of searches locally, if they go with the 1% rule they would get 10 new clients A MONTH!

Yeah if you actually get all 1000 of those visitors every month which I doubt.

Ok, if you get 30% of those, it is still 3 clients for the dentist a MONTH, lifetime value is well over $3000 per each client.

Problem is that you are trying to rank higher than places. I have seen this done but it requires much more offsite (certain keywords are heavily hit to the point where serps shows top 3 and then places, but this requires more extensive offsite). G-places is a good place for a local business as big G uses geotargeting info in its search.

Ranking in places is very analogous to ranking a site in general. You have your profile which needs to be optimized (pics, video, etc), and then you have citations which are the equivalent of backlinks for places. It also appears that ratings are very helpful in ranking places.

I have considered the rent-a-site method with the upsell option of creating a permanent G-places listing for the business renting the site.

Why not do both? For my personal business I am listed on page one with A on places and very high in serps (depending on KW spots 1-10).

Because as soon as I put "dentist city", the number of searches are less..
People in other cities will search for dentists in another city

It's not about how many visitors they get, it's about how many new
    clients they get.
    Visitors are vanity.
    Conversions are sanity

you are right about that one..

I just find the number of searches a bit low for the keyword in my city, that is all.. I will go for it and see what happens.

a citation is a mention of your business that big G finds elsewhere, it is kinda like backlinking with anchor text but this time you want big G to find your business info, with your address and phone number.

    your business
    123 anywhere st
    anytown, AA 55555
    (555) 555-5555

A common way of building citations is by using local directories. Other methods would include creating citations where you would normally build backlinks (web 2.0s, blog comments, etc).

Also keep in mind that big G integrates G-places with SERPs for certain KWs, this is called a blended listing. So having a good mix of reviews & citations for your G-places page, and backlinks pointing to your associated money site is the best mix for local businesses.

Part of being an offline consultant is telling a client what wouldn't be effective
    for them.

Outdo the competition from all angles.

    • 1 up them on your website
    • 1 up them with external links
    • 1 up them socially as well
    • 1 up them with the amount of traffic that visits the site.
    • 1 up them with the amount of youtube videos your client has over the competition

    Hope this helps.
