Found a 1,000/month keyword, it's not the best but it's decent.

keyword is "best __ __ for __ __ " A six-word longtail keyword. In the top-100, I think only 2 websites are targetting this exact keyword, because nobody else has this longtail in the title, meta title, URL slug, or in the content. Nobody is going after it.

My article was posted two weeks ago. I did all the right on-page practices and it is the most relevant content for that long-tail keyword, but I'm on page 5 after index. I know links are important, but shouldn't I get at least page 1 right away due to relevance alone? Does Google hate brand new content that much?

PS.
site is over a year old. Article is fresh.

just give 5-10 links. from web 2.0 and 1-2 guest post link. it will jump to first page easily. sometimes the sites ranking on first page are not targeting the keyword direcly but, as that page contains that long tail keyword and it has good DA, it will rank without any links.

Website age is relative.

How long is your article? Did you use some rich content? How is your website structure? Do other pages rank well?

If everything is fine and good just give it a bit more time and throw some links.

Maybe the other sites are better in terms of overall authority.
Beside, I recognized that Google takes much longer recently for exactly these kind of posts/competition area. New content by us, pinpopint targeted on an easy to reach keywords take 3-4 weeks to kick into the first page, which is odd.
I observed, Google tends to rank the root domain first on page 2-3 and then after these weeks, it takes the actual url of the post and brings in on the first page.

I have the same problem. I tried to do all SEO tips but my articles still don't have good ranking :C

Is it an "article" or is it a "post" - there's a difference.

Maybe adding to your existing content some 8000 words will move some things? You could make it an inside-out article around the keyword with the most related keywords. 1000 visitors a month (probably a lot more than whatever tool you used has you believe) is kind of a big deal...

Something along the lines of (this is just an illustration, no order, no context, merely a gist of an illustration, no point adding stuff that won't make sense for that specific topic):
  • Are there alternatives? If so, how does it compare with less suitable alternatives? What makes this better than the others. Why is it best?
  • Does it break down/spoil? And if so, how to prevent that from happening, or if it's already in that process due to neglectance, how to bring it back to life/repair?
  • Who is it for the least? (opposite to being "best for")
  • What are some more things, be it negative or positive things, that I should absolutely know about it once I get my hands on it?
  • Best practices.
  • How to use it?
  • What goes well with it?
  • How to store it?
  • How long will it last?
  • How to dispose of it?
  • What does it consist of - material qualities/attributes?
  • ...
  • How to pimp it?
  • ...
  • EVERYTHING that makes sense (this means researching and providing value, essentially)

The way I see it, it's not so much about the exact keyword but the user intent that matters in the long run (depending on the topic, of course). With long form content, chances are you'll hit the nail on the head with at least one of those sections and hook the bugger searching for this stuff and ultimately show google that this is the shit, rank this first.

Things take time, but it also depends on what off page you're doing.

5 guys could all get the same word count , style of article from the same writer, upload it and have good onpage etc. But it's then what you do after.

I am in the same situation as you. It takes time. Give it 2-3 weeks and you will see a huge push in the serps. Build some backlinks (web 2.0, also throw in one PBN link, some social bookmarks and share it on social media as much as possible) and you are good to go.

Sorry I am a noob, what do you mean by web 2.0. link building?

What is the difference between a web 2.0 blog and a guest post? A blog which you would like to link build is always hosted on some web 2.0 website , isn't it? So where's the difference?

google is like a girlfriend, you need to feed it with what it wants

Or... maybe exact keyword matter less these days and the topic of the post is more important

Google is not as predictable as it used to be and things take longer than ever. And it depends on the authority of your site, if cnn posted the same content it would be in the top 3 spots in a day, I assume.

How long before this links take affect on the domain? I have a few websites where I added some links a few weeks ago, and until now, ahrefs still dont show any backlinks.

check your google play console tool. it will show all the indexed backlinks from external sites. may the ahrefs crawlers not found your links yet.

I don't see any links but I see a lot of anchor texts

OP, given the parameters you mentioned you should jump to the front page quickly with only a minimal buy from any of the link services in the BHW marketplace

Just give it around 4-6 weeks and you will see the improved SERP results. :)
