CLIENT: I need a search engine like Google.com. Can you handle something like that?

ME: Yes, but it?s going to be expensive. May I ask what kind of budget you have in mind?

CLIENT: Budget is not a problem. I have ample resources.

ME: Can you give me a ballpark figure?

He names a figure. It is not very ample.

ME: I?m afraid that?s not going to be anywhere near enough for a project of this scope.

CLIENT: This is a good budget for a two-page website. Google is simply a search box with a second page of results. And those results are from other sites! Heck, it could be done in half this budget, but I was trying to be generous.

Always determine the clients requirements beyond what they think they want - ie did he want a search engine like google as in you type something in and it returns a result, or did he want a search engine like google as in he wants to index the entire Internet every day?

I want to build this site where you can all talk to each other - like Facebook but much simpler, all you do is just write text to each other - like max 140 characters at a time or something.
should be REALLY easy:-)

Simple as that - Twitter. We are here to work on your project 24*7. We'll come up to you once Google clone and Facebook clone get's finished.

Ah, yes the old Amazon clone chestnut,
well at least he was willing to pay $125 :)
 
How about website that let's users share their videos, like YouTube?I found my own hosting for 5$/month - it should be enough since users don't download the videos to their computer, only watch them.
 
What's the problem? Create an index.html, put <iframe src=google.com>, upload it to his site, charge him 40k ...
 
When you finish that simple project, I am willing to pay $19.95 for a site too.

Mine will have the domain blackhatworld1.com, to give a heads up on the type of site it will be.
Its just going to have a simple black background with some text on it, no big deal right?

I am sure you can easily rank the keywords as well right?
