I’m running Exact Match, but Google is spending my budget on "Close Variants" that I’ve already added to my Negative List. It’s like the system is overriding my exclusions. Is anyone else seeing this "ignore negatives" bug in 2026?

Yes, sometimes you need to switch because Exact Match is not always perfect for certain niches.

Yes, close variants run on intent matching, so negatives don’t always catch them. Add the terms as campaign-level negatives instead of shared lists, and check if the clicks come from Search Partners where blocking is weaker.

Yeah, happening here too, google close variants ignore negatives now, only fix is keep adding more exact negatives.

This is a known "negative keyword conflict" bug where close variants override exact match negatives. The workaround is to add the close variant as a negative at the campaign level (not just ad group) and use phrase match negatives for broader protection. Also, escalate to Google Support; they can sometimes manually fix the conflict on their end.
