Did no link-building or offsite seo at all and in the first two months, I had no organic keywords ranked. But in the third month, I got like 250+ organic keywords all at once (and improving), no link-building and no changes to the content. All the same. Ranking is still improving every day somehow just from the content, but in the beginning it was completely stagnant.

Content/site age seems to play a role IMO. How big or how small, I don't know. But I've seen many cases of sites gradually improving in serps as they age, with no links at all.

There are quite a few people from NL here on the forum I believe. And for your question; there is a lot less competition in NL (of course it has less search volume) so I would certainly not overlook the possibility in ranking a Dutch site. In fact I'm working on a new authority site and signs are looking good that it'll work out.



Buying an expired (or even better an auctioned domain) will give you some benefits because it usually has (some) good backlinks already and this is specifically great when you create a site in the same niche as the old content.
