Good Idea to Get Members for Membership Site?

This idea to promote my membership site popped into my head the other day. I think its a good idea and will have a viral effect which will get more members to your membership site pretty fast.

If you see something wrong w/ this idea, feel free to blow holes thru it. I havent thought TOO much about it but it sounds like a good idea to me. Here it is:


Basically you have an affiliate program setup w/ your members. Say they pay $20 a mo to be a member. They get $1 off their membership price for each person they refer to your membership site.

Example: Say you get a member at $20/mo

That member refers 5 people and now you are only getting $15 per mo for that member. But you are now getting an additional $100 per mo for spending $5. The member wins and you win. The member saves $5 per mo and you gain $100 per mo.

Does anyone see anything wrong with this?

The idea sounds good in theory, I just don't think the numbers you used for your example would do enough to motivate someone to get you any referrals. Up the $1 to something that will make someone wanna get work at getting referrals.

How about an affiliate system which pays about 50% and just pay them 50% of every new member that they've referred? That way 2 referrals and they have it free.

I would try a tied program. I referral-50% 2 referral-55% 3 referral-60 4-10 referral- 70% 11 and up 75%. You want to expand your site, then make money somewhere else !!!!!!!

make it $5 or $10

I'd go 50% or higher, it is total members that matters most.

yeah ,I think its good idea . but what membership script can be used for this affiliate program? how about paydotcom .

Which niche? That is important. Internet Marketing has a lot of freebie seekers (me included, at times). Other non-marketing related niches won't drive people to "refer" others (or it'll look like MLM and many people aren't comfortable doing that). Just a thought...
