Rep shouldn't be something that you ask for. REP = reputation. You earn your reputation on a forum or anywhere for that matter, you don't ask for it.
You can't just magically become reputable somewhere just because people are "vouching" for you. It takes a lot more than that.
The rep system should only be used for those who are actually contributing methods, shares, knowledge,etc. I believe the THANKS button is meant as a means of "oh I like this post" or even actually "thank you for posting that" and most people think that if they have a higher REP count, they may get more respected around the forums... Lately i've seen people with "high" rep getting banned... if they ACTUALLY had a high reputation, why would they end up doing something stupid and getting banned...
Getting +rep is one thing, but EARNING your rep is another.
