Hey everyone! I’ve noticed a lot of people asking how to get started on Upwork and actually land some clients, so I thought I’d share what’s worked for me and some of my friends. This isn’t rocket science, but it’s stuff that makes a difference. Let’s dive in!

1. Make Your Profile Look Good

First things first—your profile is like your resume, so don’t skip on it. Add a nice, clear photo (no selfies, please!). Write a short bio that actually tells clients what you can do for them. Don’t just say “I’m a hard worker”—be specific, like “I can help you build a clean and functional website using HTML and CSS.”

2. Start Small (Like, Really Small)

When you’re just starting, don’t go for the $1,000 projects. Find the tiny jobs—things like fixing a bug or writing a short article. Yeah, they don’t pay much, but they get you reviews. And trust me, those reviews are gold when you’re new.

3. Write Proposals That Don’t Suck

Here’s the thing: most freelancers just copy-paste the same proposal to every job. Don’t do that. Take 5 minutes to read the job post and write something personal. Mention their name if they added it. Show them you actually care about their project.

4. Be Patient (But Not Too Patient)

Upwork isn’t a magic money machine. It might take a week or two to get your first gig, but once you do, it gets easier. Just keep applying to jobs, tweaking your profile, and learning what works.

5. Bonus Tip: Know When to Rent or Partner

If you’re in a tricky region, there are creative ways to get started—some people rent accounts or partner with others. Just be careful and do your research

That’s it! Hope this helps someone out there. If you’ve got questions or need more tips, feel free to ask—I’m happy to help!

Cheers,
Alex

Haha, maybe! Thanks for the feedback. If you’ve got any better ideas on how to make this post better, let me know

C'mon... It is still early in the year. Haha!

PS.
@alex_rent Not a bad post, just feels like the usual Upwork advice. Maybe expectations were a bit high, but it’s still a good reminder of the basics!

Yes,upwork doesn’t allow to share your contact details

This doesnt work. I even added the fully completed work in the application and noone even opened it.

You shared some ideas that I like and could be useful for me.

To be honest it is very saturated and the quality of clients is not what it used to be.
Upwork it is slowly turning into a place like fiverr
You can achieve better results and get more work through simply networking and cold outreach

lol @ 'Write proposals that don’t suck'—so true! Copy-paste jobs never worked for me either. I started landing gigs when I made my proposals *about them* instead of me.
