Recently, i have seen like lots of discussion threads about getting cited in AI Overviews / ChatGPT.

Cool everyone is aware of the recent trend in SEO, but I think there’s a bigger issue that nobody is really talking about how stable are these citations actually?

I’ve been monitoring this on a few projects and one thing that stands out is the churn. A page gets cited this week, I checked it a week/month later and it’s gone. No ranking drop, no major content change, no link loss. It just stops getting mentioned. As AI systems are constantly re-evaluating and re-sampling sources rather than treating one source as a permanent winner. This makes clear that AI citations are also not a one time process like SEO.

What most people say in discussion is “just structure your content properly" "traditional SEO is fine", "AI SEO is just for name shake nothing really changes" and "optimize page for AI citations”, I agree to an extent. Better structure, clear answers, topical coverage, entity clarity, strong content, and authority all make sense. But everyone here have to understand that getting cited once is doesn't mean you are having stable AI visibility.

What I’m more interested in now is citation consistency over time.

Most case studies I see are about "how they started and where its now"
Nobody seems to be showing what happened 30, 60 or 90 days later.

The other problem is clients.

More clients are asking for “ChatGPT rankings” or “get us into AI Overviews”, but a lot of them don't really understand what they're asking for.
  • Some think it’s a ranking position.
  • Some think it’s a one-time optimization.
  • Some think AI SEO is just traditional SEO with a new name tag.
That makes the whole thing tricky to scope without overpromising.

Personally, I’d rather recommend it as improving the probability and consistency of AI visibility alongside traditional SEO, rather than promising permanent citations as replacement of traditional SEO.

Curious if anyone here is actually tracking this over time.

Have you seen pages gain AI citations and then lose them without any obvious SEO change?

I thought I was the only one. I noticed that one of my projects gets cited and removed frequently on both ChatGPT and Perplexity.

This makes me conclude that to be be consistently cited, you need to create a ton of content or keep creating fresh content across different platforms, Reddit is actually important for this. At a point it gets tiring, becomes just like SEO of old but with stronger competition.

I honestly didn't realize this.... I have seen a couple of my content pieces being cited a couple of times but I haven't actually gone back to consistently track or monitor them

This is sort of an eye-opener for me and I don't think I honestly have the strength for all that : D

Good thing it's my own website I have been working on with this over the past week.

I would just take whatever I can get while it's still showing up in AI Overviews whenever that happens and move on though

Thanks for sharing this though... This is something I would actually pass on to a couple of other people I work with so they are aware, if they aren't already because they actually offer AI visibility in their packages too.

It could help them avoid making promises to clients that they might not be able to keep up with in the long run

Yeah, citation churn is real deal. Ai visibility fluctuate even when organic rankings stay stable becoz of retrieval system reassess source relevance and query context.i'd track citation frequency alongside SERP positioning , crawlability, content freshness and query level coverage rather than treating one citation as a fixed ranking signals.

Yeah, this is a solid point. Getting cited once is easy for now, but keeping that visibility over time is the real challenge

agree with this. In my experience, if the page still gets some impressions but CTR is low, I just update the title and add fresh data. But if there is no traffic at all or intent is changed, I do a full rewrite with new structure. Thanks for explaining this clearly.
