Getting an Office to Separate Home from Work

Is there an income tax in your area, and do you pay taxes? I'm also wondering about this.
Yes I pay taxes and having an office is a business expense.

So I can get an office or give it away in taxes

I went through the same thing. Working from home is great at first, but over time the blur between work and personal life really hurts focus.

Getting an office helped me mainly with:

  • A clear mental switch into “work mode”
  • Fewer distractions and better routines
  • More consistent productivity (especially deep work)

That said, it’s not all or nothing. Before committing, you could try:

  • A coworking space a few days a week
  • Setting strict home-office hours + a dedicated room

If home distractions are already impacting output, an office usually pays for itself in productivity.

I have a dedicated room at home but my family have to walk through it if they want to go in the garden or do the laundry etc.

I feel like I can't relax enough to get in 100% work mode a lot of the time

I'm not against having an office, I have some rented spaces, some of them I use to work whenever but mostly I've dedicated a room in my apartment to be an office and I keep some rules in place (for myself) and work from home. I am getting more time instead of going through traffic.

Yes there is the travel time element to it, this is especially true if you live in a big city.

Interested about these rules you have set for yourself.

- I am working just standing, not sitting, so I have a good 3-4 hours of deep work at a standing desk. Then I move to the couch and working with my legs stretched. It works for me. When I was poor (more than now :)) ) I was having a small table on top of the other and I've made myself a standing desk.
- I have a sign on the door with open/close. Nobody can enter or knock if it's close unless the house is burning (*more or less)
- I let the phone outside the door, I don't keep it inside except if I need to make a bank transfer and need 2fa or something but as a general rule I don't keep it.
- I am using the Chrome extension UnDistracted and I block all websites that I know they're a distraction.
- I don't open PC until I've written a few daily tasks to take care of
- No food inside, only healthy snacks and water/tea/coffee/suplemets
- Noise vey low in the house from my wife (tv, music) if I am working

A good set of rules for productive working......thanks for sharing.

I too switch between a stand-up desk and sitting down....

Maybe I should adopt the sign on the door.... that's a good idea.

I use a similar app to Undistracted to block websites that distract me too :)

definitely a great choice! I've moved from working from home to 2-3 times at a co-working space.
Thanks to revolut subscription , I don't get to pay extra for visiting these co-working spaces by that way (weWork).

How are you finding working in the coworking space?

Do you find it distracting?

Are you able to talk on the phone?

Yes, you can work as you wish, but be careful of those around you.
It's just a little courtesy and nothing more. Most people use headsets while working so they literally can't hear you either.

I did it in 2019 or 2018
It was good move and was able to hire people and expand the business

I have a few freelancer friends who are doing that. One is doing it to get away from their toddlers, the other to socialize at the coworking space. I personally prefer staying home.

How long have you been working from home?
