I know there are thousands of techniques to get backlinks right from directory submissions to commenting and much more. However usually mostly users ignore the technique of embedding the backlink in their product.

That means you develop your own product such as Wordpress Theme, Worpdress Plugin (may be Free) and of course if the plugin has some innovative idea, hundreds of thousands of people will install that plugin on their blog and possibility is at the end of the day your website will rank high too.

Also lot of people are giving free wordpress themes or plugins (developed by others) online and then behind the code they use their own backlink and once you install that paid plugin/theme indirectly you are giving them Free backlink.

For example check the following website ( I am not owner/affiliate of it ) just giving you example, this person is giving free plugin but have his/her webpage rank 6 - which is huge -
Code:
http://charteredseo.com/

Hope it makes sense.

This technique can work but it needs to be used carefully. Inappropriate sitewide links can kill your rankings.

Technique is good and it also works. it gives rank to the sites.

As dreamerp said, be careful with this one. Google is on record as saying nofollow those sitewide footer links like you see in Wordpress themes or widgets you create. I've run across several case studies of some pretty high profile sites that were penalized using this technique. If you do take this route, make sure you use branded keywords instead of keywords you are trying to rank for.

Bronxbombers is pretty much right! I am sure Google has an eye on the websites which uses widget/themes to create backlinks.

But many webmasters here in my place says that Google will not update the PR and its finally dead.
Yes I agree still High PR ranking websites ranks high in the SERP's. Even Matt says that a low PR website can beat the high PR one when it satisfies the user more than the HIGH pr site.
