I was checking out SearchEngineLand's roundup of this year's SMX conference. Some good stuff on that list, but one item in particular jumped out at me:

As soon as I saw that, I thought of BHW. Definitely an interesting idea. How exactly would one do this? I'm assuming you'd need to design a flash ad and put the analytics code in the ad itself? Does anyone have any idea?

Was hoping for some opinions on execution of this method, and also just wanted to share this little nugget here.

That's what I'm talking about, although I didn't mention ecommerce specifically because I don't think that the type of competitor is really relevant here. The method of execution for this would be the same regardless of what type of competitor you're looking to follow more closely.

I'm lost as to how you would embed analytics code within an ad?

So am I, which is why I started this thread... Although I have a hunch that it would involve designing a Flash ad, and embedding the Analytics code in the Flash ad. I thought someone on here would know, I'm actually a little surprised no one does.

So no one knows how to do this? Too bad this looks like it would be something good to know.

I'm aware of Compete, and it is a useful tool, but the data it makes available is very limited. Also, I wonder how accurate it is - It's not like people have compete.com tracking code on their sites.

I honestly have no clue how you would go about doing this but I have to admit that it is a really damn good idea. But again, I really wouldn't know where to start when it comes to implementation.

Hmmm... Guess I'll look elsewhere, if I find anything I'll post it here.
