I took 2 steps back when I saw the renewal price :D
 
Ii stopped using namecheap when they increased the prices.
Porkbun is working good for me. There is a big difference in renewal price. Which adds up when you have 10s of domains.
 
As others said - look at renewal prices.

When you see FREE - run away!

Especially in tech area.

You'll never outsmart trickster when playing in his own casino.
 
Can you set this up without credit card or payment?
 
You can always transfer over the domain to a better registrar before next year renewal. They are counting on people to not realize they can do that.
 
One of the possible applications would be to get 100s/1000s of these domains to test some SEO tactics.
Maybe link between each other.
Then if some domain got some traction - do as @nirose said and transfer it to a better registrar.

But there are 2 big BUTs:

1 - Need to read the conditions thoroughly to see if they allow domain transfers when "bought" for $0. Finding this quirk might take a long time.
2 - It is just one domain and they will ask your credit card, to avoid you ordering thousands of them.

Idk if carding is still a thing, but it would be such a big endeavor to use this free offer.

A lot easier, cheaper (in terms of the cost of your time - if you're so smart to make this all happen) would be to get $1 offer for these domains from other registrars.

Overall the offer smells scammy - big renewal cost, just one promo for one domain. This is all done just to get your attention to a nothingburger.
