Further more, if your backup program has authenticated with the nas share recently then it may be accessible to the computer without the need for further authentication.

I’d recommend cloud backup with revisions, or keeping your data in something like Dropbox where you can also get revisions of your data at set points in time. I’d also recommend periodic manual backups to a drive that you keep separate from your computer.
