Annoyed with the ad deluge on social networks, many users are spending less time on the sites

http://www.businessweek.com/magazine/content/08_07/b4071054390809.htm

The paragraph that stands out is;

Social networks have some of the lowest response rates on the Web, advertisers and ad placement firms say. Marketers say as few as 4 in 10,000 people who see their ads on social networking sites click on them, compared with 20 in 10,000 across the Web. Mark Seremet, president of video game publisher Green Screen, stopped advertising on MySpace last spring because of a 13-in-10,000 response rate. "It's really hard to make money on that anemic click-through rate," says Seremet.

Anyway, there is always a new generation coming up so the number of users will not decline.

Interesting. Thanks for posting.

I've been doing a lot of posting to certain social networking sites, but the posts are laser-targeted -- and in most cases where the audience is not enured to marketing messaging, so it's working in that capacity. It doesn't hurt that I'm posting the best solution to their issues.

Best,
Sine

bffft I dont think facebook millionaires are losing sleep over this

WSJ sucks

There is no web 2.0 bubble. I agree:

Have to go back to the basics...I guess it is a good thing Microsoft didn't get Yahoo then...Keep the independent spirit strong...

Not true. Microsoft will fight to the death for yahoo.

myspace really is lame, look at what facebook has been doing. Myspace will not grow the way it used to, there are going to be much more interesting and fun networks coming up.
Myspace came early, but seriously, the site sucks!

I don't see anything really slowing down in this area.

"The Social Web" will evolve and change, though those sites will stay around in name, but may transform over the next 3-5 years (just look at the OS Facebook is reportedly developing).

Hope that gives an idea of where things may be headed. One place, one community, one search, etc.

There are just more options so people are going else where... what ever the next new thing is. This is better for affiliates becasue myspace is trying to crack down to hard anyway.

Myspace is starting to adopt some of Facebooks features like photo tagging and a bunch of other gimicks.

Only thing Myspace is missing now is Applications, other then that, myspace has everything else facebook has + other things that they don't.

Also, this is why I like web 2.0 marketing, instead of buying ads like Mr. Whitehat Business Man and spending money on advertisements I just piggy back straight off the traffic of these sites without spending a dime.

Myspace Applications are right around the corner..

Old advertising methods don't work on social networking platforms - that's all it comes down to, hence the poorly performing ads.

Look at how some advertising methods use story to sell products and services on the non-corporate level - you'll see people making more on that.

Long gone are the days when people even notice an ad. SMM is a different ballgame. You have to gently lead people to your offers or they'll run a mile the first hint they get that your promoting something. This is what these corporates don't understand.

True that whynot.

It's all about building the subtle rapport and solicting them outside.

If you run for the sell-sell-sell approach, they'll basically get you to fuck off.
