My site was ranking for many long tail keywords but this friday they all dropped at least 20 to 30 points, some not in top 100 either. I checked by searching my URL in G! and it shows up. I created some new pages and did my usual social network blast and those two new articles showed up in top 2 immediately. But all keywords that I was ranking in top 5 are now simply vanished or dropped face first.

I received no messages in webmaster tool.

Was there an update this friday? Anyone else got hit? Should I continue building links or give up and start over?

Yes, there was an EMD change for low-value sites.

More then likely you got hit because of low quality content and backlinks.

I'm not sure what EMD is. The site is of decent quality, it has articles with videos recorded by myself with an actual camera posted on youtube and embedded on the article that it relates to. It's also a local business website with verified local business G+ page. Phone number and address is on the site as well. There are no spun content on this site at all, everything is created and manually typed by me. I've never even outsourced my content. A few SEO analysis has been done and everything hits the mark. Meta-tags are all present as well and setup correctly.

However, the site is new - under 6 months.

So what is this EMD update? Does this mean I can build better quality links and get my site ranking again?

I appreciate the help but please shed some more light.

i guess the same thing hit my site on friday. All my sites went from page 1 to page 4 or so...they were quality sites and some major NON-EMD words were also hit. Waiting to see if it'll change.

oh that EMD. Well it's not an EMD, it's a brand name domain. So it's a penguin refresh that I got hit by. Any way to recover from it?

Update: Interesting thing I found, normally where an article would show up now big G! shows tag page like http://domain.com/tag/keyword instead of the actual article. Actual articles are simply not showing up for searched keywords.

If I exact search even an inner URL, it's still indexed and listed and shows up right at the top.

So where am I with this stupid update and where should I go?

Same here. Lost 60-70% of traffic. All keywords are ranked much more lower than it used to be. And the results in top 10 are all crap.

Something has really gone wrong. Even I see internal pages in ranking instead of main page where I am targeting the keyword.

Maybe it's just a glitch in their data centers. But I'm surprised no one created a thread about this since friday.

There have been several threads about it. As far as recovery from Penguin, there are tons of threads, the main element in all of them is anchor text diversity and quality backlinks.

One of my sites just got raped recently. The only keyword I'm ranking on page 1 for is the brand name. I can't even find my blog posts in google when searching for "Blog Post Title" (with quotes). The pages are still indexed, and the content on the site is good. I'm guessing the Penguin got me.

You got hit by the EMD update mate.

My domain is not Exact Match Domain.

I have mostly social, bookmarks, some articles etc. Typical BHW packages. I recently used Nanexo's Q&A service and just purchased some of Typlo's traffic. I am active on Twitter, Facebook and YouTube. I post video tutorials with my real voice and create an article for it, link back from youtube to the article etc..... that's all legit stuff that I work hard for.

EDIT: I just found some high ranks, in top 10 but they are those pesky useless tag pages. So rank is still there but pages are not.

Hello,

Dude...you must be crazy of you are thinking of giving up that easy. Just be patient and keep up the good work ....this might be a dance ....or as i belive it is just a serp recalculation and g is tryin to see where to rank your site - better or worse - but still keep up the work and im sure you can get back in the game.

Good luck to you.

Don't you guys noindex tag pages or exclude them from crawling/indexing in robots.txt? I've always run into issues whenever I allowed tag pages to get indexed.

I agree with other posts that Google is a mess. If I was running that company, I'd be sending quite a few engineers walking. Even some non-webmasters I know are complaining about Google's SERPS, so their blunders are indeed being noticed by the very same users that made Google a household name.

Optimize for Bing/Yahoo. Google is becoming a bid engine (Pay Per Click - PPC) anyway...

It is not a google dance and his website isn't hit by EMD update.
I think the website was hit by the Penguin data refresh and it's confirmed by Matt Cutts here https://twitter.com/mattcutts/status/254335294063656960
This is correct, also I am not sure what your diversity looks like. I see you are buying packages but are you mixing up the anchor text? Also the Penguin update is about sniffing out links google does not like so perhaps 1 or some or many of the links you bought have been exposed.

Keep adding content and start building some non spammy comments and web 2.0's by had, if you get the chance try to guest post on a few related sites to help with traffic and rankings

I think two updates came this week one on 29 sept (panda) and second 5 oct (penguin) my site is safe from both :)
