I do not use Windows 10, except an Enterprise version in a virtual machine. My every day runs 8.1 with Classic Shell installed. I have stepped through some nasty hoops to remove all the demands to install Windows 10, all the preloaders, and everything else. I have gone as far as to shut off automatic updates because MS is no longer trust worthy. I hunted through my installation and removed all of the telemetrics to Microsoft. I even refuse to install updates until they have been out for a few weeks so that I can see the troubles others have had and avoid them.
In spite of all my effort, Microsoft snuck two more Windows ten nags in on me disguised as security updates for Explorer 11. Both were wrapped in a single update, KB3139929. I noticed it when I opened my notification area. When I clicked on that little upward pointing chevron to see what I had running in the background, there was that little get Windows 10 icon sticking its tongue out at me. I saw instant red; after all the day before I took a ball peen hammer to a tablet that attempted to install W10 the day before and would not let me shut the installation off.
Having bee through the primrose park before, I began hunting. It did not take long at all on the Web to find the offending update. I uninstalled it. Ain't life a bitch; even though uninstalled, the machine insisted on attempting to update. Been there before too. Ran down to the Windows directory and attempted to delete everything in the GWX directory and the syswow64/GWX directory. Microsoft decided that those directories could not be under a users control which force me to take ownership of them. I could delete everything but the GWX.exe file in both directories. I'm thinking WTF!!!
Well, I enable the administrative account and log in to it to delete those two files. The computer just smirked. Though in the administrative account, I was given a message of "The user does not have permission to perform the action." WTF!!! I am in the normally disabled and inactive administrative account (net user administrator /active:yes) and I lack permission to delete a file? So I fired up the registry editor and found what was locking the file and deleted the lock. The I deleted the files.
I thought two can play this game, so I put locks on both GWX directory and revoked permissions for the trusted installer to access those directories.
Now it was time to remove the scheduled tasks. I opened the task manager and went to delete the two tasks that start the W10 installer. Again I was told "User lacks permission." WTF!! X 2. Out come regedit again and I hunt up the offending entries in the registry. After finding the entries, then I attempted to delete the path to the executable. "No permission." WTF!! I attempt to change the permission, again "No permission." At this point I was pissed. I back out one more level and delete the key.
When will Microsoft get the idea that though they are intent on forcing Windows 10 down our throats, there are those of us that are just as determined to prevent that from occurring.
