There's been much discussion recently on the efficacy of char-code spinning, and so I thought I'd publish this comprehensive Case-Study and SEO Analysis that I did over the last 8 weeks (since most of the Panda changes.) I do this 3 times per year as a sanity-check for all our tools suite.
Content Used:
I wanted to test/prove this concept WITHOUT the use of original content (as otherwise I wouldn't be testing the char-spinning element.) So I chose a PR 4 wikipedia page - as I wanted something well established and well-indexed already as a comparative.
Wikipedia Scraped Page: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Feed-in_tariffs_in_the_United_Kingdom
Submission Technique & Tool:
Advanced (letter-level as opposed to word-level) Char-Spinning was output from our tool-set with the density cranked up to almost max level - to see if it had any negative indexing affects. (Around 80% of words had some letters spun throughout each word - but not all letters in the word.)
Results:
Google (UK) is showing 890 exact match search results (including 'supplemental' index pages which they show in their headline numbers) for search query: "Kristy B. D. Burns-Mullins."
ScrapeBox returns 89 primary fully-indexed page URL's from Google (See list at bottom of post.)
Google Result #1 is : http://freearticlesonline.net/?p=799
Viewing this page's source code (CTRL 'U' for Firefox/Chrome|Alt 'V' then 'C' for IE) clearly shows the char-spinning codes have been embedded.
IMPORTANT NOTE: This level of char-spinning is too high for 'real' use - as it obfuscates too much content and will actually impede rankings for relevant keywords - as Google has less content to use for keyword estimation. (Although it still has the page-title which is the most important - and NOT char-spun. Titles should NEVER be char-spun under ANY circumstances.) For effective commercial use, we use the copyscape standard of 4-word quanta, which yields an average of 60% untouched content and 40% part-letter-spun content. You can see our explanation page listed below for more details on understanding this.
If we take the 1st line from the 2nd Paragraph of the Google #1 result page:
"The Feed-In Tariff applies to small-scale generation of electricity, paying a fixed sum for eligible technologies."
Then you can see it's on the wikipedia page - the first line in the first paragraph under the 'Scope' sub-heading.
If you want to check/prove it for yourself, you'll need to 'UN-Char-Spin' the line when you copy it out of the article page; you can do this at: http://www.ubertoolz.com/demo/CleanUp.php and then search for:
<Wikipedia "unspun line above...">
This submission currently supports the no 15 spot on google (UK) for keyword "solar water heating panels" - (keyword seen 'in-content' on page,) but many different keywords were seeded into multiple extended anchors across around 10 different landing pages on this one submission. Plus, other SEO has been done to this page: the ranking effect isn't down to this one article; but that wasn't what this test was about. It was about testing the Char-Spinning technique.
Conclusion & Supporting Data:
This test clearly shows that Char-Spinning an already-indexed medium-PR page gets it treated as unique content by Google. Of 964 successful submissions, 890 made it into the supplemental index, and 89 were in the primary index. Of the 890 in the supplemental index, many could be brought into the primary index through 2nd and 3rd tier linking strategies providing links to those article pages (which is what we do every day with our normal submissions.)
NOTE: We NEVER use Wikipedia scraped content in real-life; it would be foolish: Don't do that! It was only used an example/test for this investigation. We always use 'original' (and braces-spun) content for all our submissions; and you should too.

- A Single AMR (Article Marketing Robot) submission was performed on 09/09/2011 with 964 'successful' submits achieved across 1200 directory D'Base (including some imported dir's.)
- Every article was seeded with the unique author name: "Kristy B. D. Burns-Mullins." for easy index-checking.
- There was no 2nd tier/supporting back-linking of any type done at all. It was purely the AMR run here.
- The submission created links to many different landing pages, using around 50 different varied anchors.
Results:
