Citations are essential to ranking you business on Google maps. I'd like to start giving back more frequently on BlackHat world. The value of a citation is different depending on your location but this guide is still sure to bring in value to your maps placement no matter where you live. There are plenty of services out there that claim to get you listed everywhere but I strongly suggest doing this yourself, manually, and being extremely accurate. These are just the basics, I'm working on a longer list of 200+ valued citations but I want to make sure each site provides value before I throw it on here. Anyway, here's a list I helped put together based on my own value system:

    1. Google+ Local ? Get Listed on Google+
    2. Acxiom ? Get Listed on Acxiom
    3. Yahoo Local ? Get Listed on Yahoo
    4. Bing Local ? Get Listed on Bing
    5. Express Update USA ? Get Listed on Express Update USA
    6. Facebook ? Get Listed on Facebook
    7. YouTube ? Get Listed on YouTube
    8. Twitter ? Get Listed on Twitter
    9. Yellow Pages ? Get Listed on Yellow Pages
    10. Yelp- Get Listed on Yelp
    11. CitySearch ? Get Listed on CitySearch
    12. Superpages ? Get Listed on Superpages
    13. Local ? Get Listed on Local
    14. Nokia ? Get Listed on Nokia
    15. BBB ? Get Listed on BBB
    16. Chamber of Commerce ? Get Listed on Chamber of Commerce
    17. MapQuest ? Get Listed on MapQuest
    18. elocal ? Get Listed on eLocal
    19. Manta ? Get Listed on Manta
    20. MojoPages ? Get Listed on MojoPages
    21. Merchant Circle ? Get Listed on Merchant Circle
    22. Angies List ? Get Listed on Angies List
    23. insiderpages ? Get Listed on insiderpages
    24. Thumbtack ? Get Listed on Thumbtack
    25. City-Data ? Get Listed on City-Data

If a longer list is something you all would be interested in let me know and I'll work on putting it together faster. Thanks!

I had links pointing to the submission area of each site but I haven't posted enough on here in order to activate links. If you'd like me to pm you the list with links let me know.

What about creating citations in directories in the business's particular neighborhood or creating citations in directories for the business's particular industry?

Do you consider the popular citations above more important than industry/location specific citations?

Google is constantly putting more weight on local links and citations. A simple analysis of top competitors in any industry will almost always come back with the same results in a highly competitive market.

When competition is high you'll expect to see the top ranking businesses follow a trend, that being, each business has a strong backlink profile(with highly trusted local and non local links) and a strong list of citations. The number of citations, however, vary drastically and a business with 1/4th the amount being indexed by Google can still be ranking number 1 due to a number of factors. Make sure all the listings read the same ([Drive, Dr.] [Suite, Ste.]), put them on valued citation directories and you'll be sure to see results. The more local citation sources, the better.

Almost all of the time citation sources give you the option to list according to your industry and location so they all provide some value in terms of industry specific and location. Syncing up your citations by industry is definitely a critical factor. Google is analyzing all of your data. Category, Address, Business name and Keywords should all be the same. I've recently read an article talking about how changing your description for each citation could increase your ranking but I've always used the same description and I've never had an issue.

These citations listed above have extremely high value and they are all easily attainable. Location and industry optimized directories might be a little harder to find, might cost money and might be impossible to get so there's a frustration factor here. I would at the very least start with this list and over time expand. A slow increase in activity keeps eyes on you so don't build out something fast then stop.

I can't post links but I can help.

Google search "Nokia business listing". You'll see a HERE Prime Places result. Click that and you'll be able to add it.
