Yeah, I remember hearing about those days too. Back then many blogs were happy to accept free guest posts because they mainly wanted fresh content. Now things have changed a lot and most sites charge for placements. It really shows how much the SEO and guest posting space has evolved over time.

the free lunch era is dead since webmasters realized they can bank hard on selling juice
 
Not only SEO industry but All Marketing industry Have been changing Day by Day. Its Simple. But at present Quality Backlinks is very Tough to manage. BTW in your Post i feel the Past.

Now it’s mostly pay-to-play.

Free guest posts still exist, but they’re rare or mostly lower quality.
 
I think it mostly changed because content is easy to get now, but a real site with trust and traffic isn’t.

Back then, site owners were happy to get decent free content. Now they can get content much easier, whether through AI, writers, or both. So the thing they charge for isn’t really the article, it’s access to their site, their audience, and their existing authority.
 
I still find free spots here and there, but I treat them more like slow-burning plays than quick wins. The trick for me has been building real rapport with smaller site owners instead of dropping cold outreach. If they see you as someone who adds value, doors open a lot easier and sometimes you get recurring slots without pulling out the wallet.
