you can use the website porkbun.com to register a .design domain for free with the voucher code JUSTFREE, it will expire after a year unless you decide to renew. you will have to input your credit card details and you'll be charged $1 for confirmation. i haven't tried it myself but some people might find it useful. i am not affiliated with the website.
