That is awesome! Reminds me of my first offline method:

1. Shoplift 60min cassette tapes from Sears.
2. Record MTV hits through Dad's "hifi" TV speakers onto cassette tapes
3. Smuggle bootleg tapes into school in hollowed out dictionary.
4. Sell tapes to other kids who weren't allowed to watch or that didn't have MTV behind the gym during recess! LOL $3-$5 ea!

Come to think of it I made more money doing that than I have in the last year of IM... Sh*T! that is depressing! funny though....:p

Uhg. Kids today are two soft. We should have to be in the military for 2 years mandatory so kids will have some respect for the damn country that gives them everything they have.

I could rant about kids today forever.

Guilty as charged of everything written there! :) I remember when I finally upgraded (after swearing and begging my parents...) to a 14.4 kb modem: wow, that was blazing fast, man... I totally felt like I could be the kid of War Games, right after that.. :D

Internet (and BBS before that) was a very different place. It's true we were the pioneers of a new era. And sorry to say that no board, no outlaw committee, no underground group motivated by some agenda today will ever be able to recreate the sense of reckless community and that feeling of belonging to something unique we felt on the net back then.

At the time you weren't cool because you wanted to know, you didn't do it because everybody was "on it", you didn't do it because it was trendy, you didn't do it for lulz and you didn't do it for the cash, you did it because you were curious and often had an unquenchable thirst for knowledge. The world was still big, diverse, non-realtime. No google, no wikipedia, no real connections outside your neighborhood: curiosity and knowledge were commodities hard to find, slow to obtain, but invaluable to share with your peers maybe -for the first time- some like-minded kids at the opposite end of the globe. And you can't really explain what it was like to those who weren't there.

But whatever time goes by, they say.. :)

Soon we are going to live in Idiocracy, so I don't care much what it used to be in the 1980-90-2000-ies, because I remember it and it sucked badly. Today kids have 300%+ chance of getting laid that the nerds of the 1980-ies, who are today top IMers.

ugh i remember these nights when i try to get online but i couldn't cuz someone is always on the phone talking. i often have to wait after midnight.

I had the ZX-81 and then the ZX-Spectrum, then got the commodore64 which had the sound from your games on your TV.
Jet Set Willy was a great game then, how quickly things have moved on.

Or playing games over serial connection. Call your friend up and make sure that they had their modem ready, hang up the phone and then dial the number back with your modem and get the game to connect.
