Follow passion or the money?

Hi,

I have a passion for travel and have recently thought about starting a YouTube travel documenting trip reports on trains, flights, etc across Europe and other parts of the world, as I have seen some other channels do this quite successfully and gain a lot of views after churning some videos out.

My question is, it may not necessarily be the most profitable niche, do you think it's best to pick something you might be more interested in starting or should you try and go in on a more profitable niche (e.g personal finance videos).

A lot of peoples including me, don't have a passion for something you can use to make $$ like you do ! so go for it !
 
Anyone with money will of course say passion. You have to ask those who have to do a job they don't like... if you do a job and if you really like it, you are really lucky. And if it's your passion you re blessed.
 
I think that travelling niche could be really profitable. There is ton off affiliate networks in travel niche, including booking.com and multiple flying companies.

You can make a videos about insanely cheap ticket flights. And get a money for every sold ticket.

I know one person having blog about cheap flights And he Is earning solid money from it

I also suggest start a blog, tik tok And instagram. Do livestreams on all platforms.

Current trend on twitch Is IRL streams of travellers. You can try it too.

Create buymeacoffee, or pateon account once you have decent fanbase.

You can also create dropshipping website with travel related items And create videos like

"You definitely need these 5 weird items, to survive trip to Sahara desert"

"These 5 camping items make your camping better, than being in 5-star hotel"

You basically have Infinite options to monetize travelling content

Travel niche Is insanely profitable.

In fact you can earn much more money with affiliate, than from adsense. Just be creative. You dont even need 100k's views

To follow your passion you need a lot of money. If you have it go for passion!
 
The best is to do both at the same time. The travel niche is saturated, but you can definitely make it if your content is interesting, you are entertaining and your videos are well edited/produced.

Right now is a pretty good time since many people are interested in traveling during the pandemic. You could start off by making videos like "Riding a train in Portugal during the pandemic" or "Hotel prices in Vienna during the pandemic" or other videos related to the pandemic, restrictions, etc. just make sure you don't talk about the vaccine otherwise you will get banned.

Basically how much money you earn depends on how much traffic and exposure you get. Traffic = money. More subs/views, the more intention you will get, also from sponsors, etc.

I agree travel niche is too saturated but try to find sub niche in the travel niche
 
Follow your passion, but monetize the process of following your passion, then money would follow. Easy in theory, right ? But, there are people doing it.

i saw some people travelling in dangerous countries (libya, yemen, iraw, even afghanistan) are really popular. I would recommend to travel to controversial countries like Belarus, etc. and make videos about something recent.
 
IMO my previous response was a little flippant. To elaborate:
I think the issue with content these days is that the litmus test for whether your content will be successful depends more on how attention-grabbing it is, rather than how qualitatively good it may be.
If you do want to succeed with high quality content, it makes sense to drill down into a sub-niche. For example, NomadCapitalist targets the intersection of travel enthusiasts and digital nomads. If you can find a sub-niche within travel that taps into a community that's very passionate about their lifestyle, you'll have a highly engaged audience and can make it work.
 
In your case, I'd say passion
You may have to spend hours on end editing and crafting the content
 
Have some backup and follow your passion. It can help you to earn money with peace of mind.
 
You already picked a profitable niche. Go for it!
