Edit: I guess not.
By the way, that site doesn't look that good; plus it is not even https. Work on the on site issues first may be. And build good links obviously.

Somewhat joking, but not really.
Since starting I've change permalinks multiple times, and now have a lot of redirects. I believe this is the root of where things started going wrong. Changing my permalink structures .etc

I would definitely prefer to come out the other side of this with a recovery under my belt. But honestly, I've been trying to fix this for a few months now.

Well, as long as you don't change the published date everything should be alright.
What you heard is wrong btw. Google loves fresh and new content especially when is updated.

Fresh new, but I don't know how that works with content rewrites, for example, for content that's already ranking.

It looks like you were overdoing your SEO. If you messed with permalinks it might take a long time to recover.
Also I found ~23 external liks on your article "How to make money with bitcoin". I checked only a few though and they were do follow. External linking is good, but you should focus on less sources or make others as no follow. For example, when you list "best bitcoin mining software", make these links no follow as you don't really use them as a source, and when linking to wikipedia use do follow.
In general, a lot of things could be improved here. Maybe I'll write more my insights later.

Yes, not so much recently, but during the 5 years I've been up, I've done that. But now the vast majority of 404s .etc have been redirected (with a list of over 1k redirects).

Yeah I've been trying to optimise stuff more and more, in the hopes it will recover, but always baring in mind that I shouldn't be slamming too many keywords in .etc. I mean the content, realistically speaking, is far better than many of my competitors for certain articles. But it's been an extremely painful journey with no reward for a long time now.
If you could offer your insights it would be greatly, greatly appreciated.

You don`t build a brand, you build a casual blog, it's a big difference.
Magazine style, talk about everything, ranking for nothing.
You barely have 20 decent referring domains, I've seen cheap PBNs better than your site link profile.
SEO costs money, proper SEO loads, periodically.
Branding costs more money.
Your site is not different then any 99% of your "niche" if we can talk about your site is in a specific niche other then "make money online".

However, I would take this as full truth if I hadn't experienced ranks before.
I have in the past, ranked higher than the companies I've written about; without the use of PBNs .etc.
I have always been whitehat..

The thing I'm most fearful about is losing my ranks later down the line, after I build. That's why I'm hesitant to consider this sort of thing.

The thing or two is not enough for 5 years. You should banking a couple of thousands of passive income by now at least.
Also, there are many SEO methods that are not shady, such as on-page optimization, which you need to learn first. That is fundamental.
