First time dealing with SEO

Is a one-time strategy approach actually doable given our current ranking, or am I setting myself up for failure if I don't fight for a monthly retainer?

A one-time SEO audit should be enough if you're already ranking well and the competition is low. Just monitor your rankings and update things when needed.

It really depends on the scope and expectations. Since you mentioned the site is already ranking well, if the work is limited to cleaning up metadata, improving schema, fixing a few technical issues, and making other small optimizations, then a one-time fee could make sense. The size of the site is another factor, as a 20-page website is a very different project than a 2,000-page one. On the other hand, if you're expected to continually identify new opportunities, create and execute an SEO strategy, and drive growth over several months, then a monthly retainer is probably the better option. It all comes down to the amount of ongoing work involved.

From agency side one time fee makes sense only if scope is genuinely narrow, technical cleanup, on page fixes, thats it. problem is seo work rarely stays contained even for well ranking sites, competitors eventually catch up, algo shifts happen, content needs refreshing, if theres no ongoing budget then nobody's watching when rankings start slipping n by the time boss notices its already lost ground. id push for at least a lighter monthly check in even if full retainer isnt approved, doesnt need to be expensive just enough to catch issues before they become bigger problems

Yeah in my experience seo starting would be great but it's very important to learn basics first and understand how the search engines works because staying consistent makes a huge difference.
