Firefox Connectivity Problems

OK, my Firefox will run fine when I first start up but gets progressively worse as I continue on the net to the point at which it will simply no longer connect anyplace.

Cookies, cache, etc, taken care of, no viruses, no trojans; I do use proxies but even NOT using proxies does not help.

Configuration is by the book but I notice that Firefox keeps trying to update but won't connect to that either!

Using XP on a hotrod compaq.

AOL works fine with no problems at all, I do have IE also which seems to run a bit slow.

Use Skype on this box but netstat tells me that I have no connections that I should not have.

Also, I have high-speed broadband.

Anybody know whatup?

try setting your internet connection settings to dial when there is no connection and have a dummy dial up network connection available. when browsing, if you are going to a site, and the dial up box pops up, that will narrow the problem down a little, as i would start looking into some connectivity problem. if not, then it may be something with your firefox.

are you absolutely sure there is no trojans or rootkits installed?

Have you recently installed any software like SetPoint software for Logitech MX5000 Laser wireless desktop set (Bluetooth keyboard & mouse)?

try that, crank up your limit, see what happens, also id suggest trying opera or ff3 just for the hell of it, also if you have some crappy onboard network card, consider replacing it with an intel pro1000 network card (even if you dont have a gige lan, these things are fkn nuts, driver is god dammed brilliant and you will use FAR less cpu time when your flogging your net connection with them)

Nice try but I don't have dial-up as I indicated in my original post.

How is teeling my box to dail when I haven't even a dial-up modem installed going to help?

I have high-speed broadband.

Perhaps I need to clarify: Firefox shows that it is connecting but never seems to get there; giving me the "done" thingy at the bottom of the screen.

"Refreshing" does no good.

"A" for effort!

No.

I only use wireless away from my permanent location and then only on a dedicated laptop as wireless is completely insecure.

Does this problem happen when you are using wireless connection to a router/accesspoint/bridge? Or does it happen when you have a wired connection to the computer. Is this a laptop you are using?

I do not use wireless except from the dedicated laptop and then only away from my primary place of biz.

My system goes through a Lkinsys router and has four boxes connected and it is only the Big Box which is experiencing the difficulty.

The lap is for "other shit" and I only run it from places well away from home, normally on piggy-backed connections!

Ok.

I'm not sure how long you will have to go to see if this works, but give this a try and see if it helps.

Go to START - RUN - type in: cmd
In command box, type: ipconfig /flushdns

If this helps, I can post a perm. solution to add to your registry to turn off dns caching.

Have you tried the first thing you should have done? Uninstalling and re-installing? Try that and also run some spyware cleaners and anti-virus to see if you have anything funny running. Uninstalling and re-installing has saved me from literally hundreds of headaches, it's the simplest fix, but a lot of times it works and permanently.

i know you dont have dialup. that is why i suggest setting a dummy one up.

so if it is a connection problem, while using the broadband, because you will have set the setting like i suggest to dial when no connection, then if while using broadband, when there is a problem, that dialup box should pop up, because it will "find no connection". if it doesnt pop up, then the problem is not the connection. can you see what im saying?

You might want to get a sniffer to see what kind of activity you have on your ports, you may have gotten nailed with some kind of spyware, that certainly would explain the not being able to connect. Have you checked to see whats going on with your bandwidth?
 
I couldn?t connect with FF this morning, know why? I had a proxy jammed into it; the best advice is to reinstall it.

Yes, Ghost Surf but even when I exit that program I get the same results.

Yes, I am not being attacked or sniffed, which is why I am so confused about this matter.
