Firefox Connectivity Problems

i know you dont have dialup. that is why i suggest setting a dummy one up.

so if it is a connection problem, while using the broadband, because you will have set the setting like i suggest to dial when no connection, then if while using broadband, when there is a problem, that dialup box should pop up, because it will "find no connection". if it doesnt pop up, then the problem is not the connection. can you see what im saying?

Yep!

Got it and will check it out!

Thanks.

try setting your internet connection settings to dial when there is no connection and have a dummy dial up network connection available. when browsing, if you are going to a site, and the dial up box pops up, that will narrow the problem down a little, as i would start looking into some connectivity problem. if not, then it may be something with your firefox.

are you absolutely sure there is no trojans or rootkits installed?

Yep, been through all sorts of updated spyware programs and they find binandi!

Also, my netstats tell me that all is well.

Thanks.

Hi Uptownbulker,

Another thing you could do regarding firefox is follow the instructions on this page:

Yeah!

I did not find that in my searches!

Thanks!

Uptownbulker,

Something I didn't think of and have had problems myself with what appeared to be my browsers being slow or not connecting at times was actually not my computer(s), but rather my line dropping packets. My ISP had to come out and verify and then apply a filter at my house because of noise. Could happen even after having service for years. Just one day it starts slowing down, or so it appears, but in fact is losing packets during transmissions. You might check here for the line quality test:

hxxp://www.dslreports.com/linequality --- EDIT: sorry. That won't work. For members of DSL Reports only.

You can go here and test speeds. If you notice sharp spikes up and down or stalled speeds, this could be an indicator of dropped packets. This is the tool I used to tip me off on something wrong. That and I tried to upload files to my ftp server and it would stall like I wasn't connected or at a lower-than-dialup connection.

You know, that is very interersting as I know for a fact that I am the only person on my block with boradband.

Normally my speed tests rocket right along but who knows?

I live in an area which is not, shall we say, "computer literate"; a very blue collar community and the cable guy told me about a week ago that I was the only one within like 2 blocks with broadband.

Interesting and I will check it out.

Thanks.

Have you brought up taskmanager and clicked on the processes tab to se which processes other than firefox may be affecting your pc. Also d/l winpatrol and check the same thing.

The packet thought could be your culprit but the same thing would happen with ie or any other browser if you tested with that.

Also. If you have a wireless router do you have the wep key enabled? This is just for your protection so others can't use your box.

OK, I DO NOT use wireless.

Wireless is an open door to your house and I like locks.

AOL works fine.

IE willwork OK but in my estimate runs slow.

I hav a WIRED broadband connection to my boxes via a Liksys router and am experiencing these problems on one box only.

I can wrong in the box.

I keep processes to a minmum but who knows?

I will check it out.

Thank you for your reply!

This may sound stupid but have you tried to reset your cablemodem and/or also your router. unplug them and wait at least 1 minute.

Sometimes, you can call your provider and have them reset the line. they'll probably have you reset the modem and router too.

this can work many time especially because they are dynamically determining your IP address unless u specificly asked for a static IP address.

All it takes is a call.

Dude, there ain't no "stupid"; the only "stupid" question is the one you don't aks and the only "stupid" suggestion is the one that you do not make!

You are good and cool in my book!

Thanks and I wil pursue this avenue as well!

Thanks!

You know, I never met so many nice people in one spot as I have met on this forum.

Thank you.

A story with a happy ending!

I ended up trying the things which I had been told to do and found that apparently everything was in order as far as the web was concerned; no attacks, no sniffing, etc....so...........................................

...I unplugged the cable modem and powered it down overnight.

...This morning I powered it back up and before going online, I uninstalled Firefox, cleaned up the box, restarted, downloaded Firefox through AOL, re-installed Firefox and...

LO!

All was well!

Thanks all for your help!

Uptown.
