Finding out if an ebook converts before creating it.

Oh, my God. Are you serious? You are thinking about driving traffic to a product you haven't even created yet? Then lose money in the process to see if the product converts? What would be your next step?

You probably also heard "it takes money to make money"
The investment would be pretty small compared to the amount of time / money i would spend to create the product. In this niche it would take a considerable amount of time / money to create the ebook, especially for a quality product.

Why not utilize ask.com and others to ask questions and poll the people to find the hungry crowd. Or do a free report to build your mailing list before putting it out there before it's done. My two cents.
You could just:
a- See what's already selling well and build upon it ( even create products/services/coaching that fill wholes for already popular CB products )
b- Build a list/web 2.0 community first, ask them exactly what they want and then give it to them. You can even give discounts for those who reserve the book early ( even before it's actually written ). However, you're working here with people that already trust you and know a lot about the future product ( they designed it ).
c- Look around in forums, yahoo answers, 43 things, Amazon/ebay hotlists, adwords ads or offline ads - check these for a while to see which ones remain -; do KW search for "how to" terms, etc and again see what people are looking for.
Going the PPC route is ok but use it to build a list and work on it.

Why not just have an optin list on the landing page and make the ebook depending on the number of signups and then u have a mailing list too

I believe you are going about it the wrong way..if I were you I would do things Glenn Livingston style were you ask the market the most important questions and figure out what there fears are etc..let me give you an example..
For this example lets say you were selling an ebook on how to use PPC..you would ask the following questions

1 Are you currently using Adwords?

A basic business principle that you are missing: a business exists to make money. If a business is not making money, it is a hobby.
I also don't think you need money to make money, but it sure is helpful.

in fact , even i am in the process of writing an ebook myself , but what i am doing here
is going around google and other forums checking if there is a demand for the product
or not .
Dont try to sell a product that is already flooded the market , instead create a product
whose demand is on the rise .
You can check out google trends and may be yahoo buzz to do so .
If i were u , i would spend more time on list building .
say for example you have 5 websites , that are dealing with the niches you are
marketing , and you give away some free sh!t to them to sign up .
You can end up with a list of 10,000 email addresses if each site had 2000 sign ups .
you could use paid traffics to do so .

U can use Google Insights for market research.
It can help u more accurately gauge market demand and help u determine whether ur niche is seasonal or not.
Once u've decided that the market is there test with PPC.
Also, with PPC if u don't get any conversions after a 100 - 200 clicks I would either close the campaign or do some tweaking.

You're technique will almost work but like an earlier poster said, it's better to give people an opt in form where they can register to receive notice when your ebook is out. If they are interested, have them sign up and maybe send them a short teaser article or free report whetting their appetite - or just selling the benefits (outlining the exciting things your ebook is going to teach them.) If you get a nice amount of optins you will have a premade list of people who will be willing to buy.
Nothing wrong with doing some PPC to a test page, guys. More importantly, it's a good way to see if your keywords really get you traffic, and then you can adjust your campaigns long before your ebook actually comes out. By the time your ebook is ready, you'll have an opt in list of people who are presold, plus you'll have tweaked your PPC campaigns to find good keywords and you'll have a nice idea of what kind of traffic you can expect from your ads.

from one noob to another in the "ebook marketing world" I think you should create the product, then send traffic to it. The point is to make money here not lose it. I see what you mean by "testing" but I just wouldn't do it that way. Also, there are so many products out there and personally if I saw one for 5 bucks I probably wouldn't buy it because its only $5 (how good can the content really be if its so cheap). just my 2 cents.

The video series "Do You Suck At Making Money?" has a whole method on ebook sales. The archive should be around here somewhere.
Instead of selling your ebook directly, you give it away, but force the buyer to go through a PPC or CPA page. Then the merchant pays you for the lead. The whole she-bang works off of these guys:
