I realize that you may be closing this topic now, but I wanted to offer my insight from being a very depressed person for most of my life until the past few years.
I got over depression by realizing three very, very important things:
1. Happiness is a choice (a.k.a. look on the bright side)
2. Variety is the spice of life
3. This too shall pass (nothing lasts forever)
I know that first one sounds crazy, but it really is true -- that is, if you continue to dwell on feeling crappy, you will continue to feel crappy. Trying hard to look at the funny things in life that are always happening around you will remind you that it isn't all bad. Maybe you are sick with a disease, but the doctor who treats you walks or talks funny. Maybe you broke up with your girlfriend or boyfriend but the new person they are dating is a total loser, so you win. Maybe your parents treat you like dirt, but at least you are younger (and probably cooler) than them.
One of the biggest killers of the spirit is monotony, and lord knows most IMers face this on a daily basis. Obviously you could automate a lot of things you do to help, but adding a little spice to your life wouldn't hurt either. Try some of the following to gain a new perspective
- take a new route to work/school/or other scheduled event. a new route yields new faces and obstacles
- try eating something new -- my new food lately is Craisins. I found some blueberry ones too, soooooo good.
- try using your left hand for things that are easy that you normally use your right hand for (or vice versa if you are already left-handed)
- talk to new people that you wouldn't ordinarily speak to, especially people that you see a lot but tend to ignore
- if you normally smoke weed or drink, try taking a break; not for good, just a break to gain some perspective
- try going to a community event. you don't even have to participate, just go and be an onlooker (could be a political event, a social event, religious event, etc). This one actually really helps lift my spirits cuz I always end up seeing some people that I either a) never want to be like and it makes me happier or b) really want to be like and it makes me work harder and look up.
The third thing can be good or bad, but I tend to view it always on a positive note. Nothing lasts forever, be it an event you are nervous about, being broke, or even a relationship. It's a good thing when things end because it allows for the freshness of a new period of your life -- I mean to say that it may be a little sad at first, but once you realize that it was inevitable you may realize that this opens the door for something new (new job, new girlfriend, new friends, new location, etc).
Hope this helps you or anyone else in the same situation.
