Fake credentials

So many people on BHW have written ebooks on some subject about which they are very knowledgeable, I'm sure. But seeing as how they are here on this forum, they obviously take the more independent approach to their work and may not have a college degree or any other qualifications.

Basic marketing psychology would tell us that given these two choices,
1) An ebook written by someone with no official credentials but who "really knows his stuff"
2) An ebook written by someone with a Master's Degree in the subject who has worked in the field for 10 years

Most people will choose #2. Authority sells. That's why every sales page for "make money at home" ebooks features some "self-made millionaire" boasting about his mansion, his 15 Lamborghinis, and his Asian supermodel wife who cooks him steak and lobster every morning while wearing nothing but a micro-bikini made out of $100 bills. We've all seen it: stock market guides written by "former insiders," weight loss books written by "expert powerlifting coaches," etc.

My question is, can someone get in any trouble for making up fake credentials and/or qualifications? My biggest concern is fraud, since you're selling someone a product under false pretenses.

I make up fake credentials every time I ewhore someone, or I generate fake accounts for youtube... Its the internet man. make your self the king of england no one cares as long as you deliver the promised product.

both barbara deangelis and her ex husband john grey (men are from mars women from venus) claimed to be phds when they wrote their books. neither really were. they sent away to diploma mills for fake credentials. nothing bad happened to either one when they were discovered, and they are both still rich.
