Thank you for this great platform BHW for sharing wonderful knowledge.

I am doing SEO for my web portal since 2011. It is currently ranking in middle of first page for medium competitive keywords with searches of around 20k. And also for couple of terms in second pages. And LOTS of long tails.

I started wondering what are the factors/metrics to consider a website as authority website (Which should be measurable by algorithms). It is a question I couldn't answer myself clearly. So your views will be greatly appreciated. I will update the below section after the discussion in this thread. Keep going thanks

Factors To Consider A Website As Authority

1) Domain Age (Need to check whether site is alive or not since the registration)
2) Indexed Pages (Quality of pages to be considered)
3) Branding (Using Citations to some extend)
4)
5)
6)

Thank you for your suggestions. Please post your suggestions.

I will update the list based yours feedback.

should be well informative website with in a particular niche or multiniche website .Should have 100 article.

Ok, Can I interpret that as index size to define the authority? The quality of information is hard to measure :)

Site age
Content lengths
Links from authority aged domains

1. Rank No.1 in google
2. Rank No.1 in google
3. Rank No.1 in google
4. Rank No.1 in google

2. Rank No.1 in google
3. Rank No.1 in google
4. Rank No.1 in google

If rank no.1 is authority site. Then this thread should not be here and also Matt Cutts needs to find another job. :)

Also the design and feel of the site would be a factor, in my opinion, you want something not too flashy, but also not too simple.

3. The quantity
4. The viral brand

Quantity already taken in the OP and Yes .'Branding' will be updated to the OP thanks

silo'ed site seems to send some of the right signals as well

Look and feel, even person to person differs. Hard to measure by algorithm :)

Thank you so much for your suggestions.

Sure, an authority site is a blog or website that demonstrates an in-depth knowledge or "authority" in a specific niche. By definition, an authority is someone who has credibility, exerts influence, has many followers and commands attention.

I will update the OP with social presence. By Facebook FanPages, Twitter Followers.

thank you

It comes down to your readers. An authority site is considered authority based on its credibility, readership count, loyalty/trust from the readers, and how consistent it is at doing that. So the number of content and rankings do not really matter to me. Instead, someone can have 20 articles but has a big readership, high credibility, and a lot of loyalty from the readers when on the other hand a site has 1500 articles, a big audience but does not have much credibility and the readers are not loyal.

Heres one that hasnt been mentioned yet and gets overlooked. Domain expiration date. Authority domains are registered for several years in advance and never go down to wire for renewal.
