Facebook Quiz App Journey

Hello guys,

This is my first post here. Although I've been reading a lot, only now I decided to start posting, and maybe get some valuable feedback from you guys.

So, I decided to create a quiz app for facebook in August, after seeing the viral effect of those quizzes. Some of them have millions of active users, and they are fairly simple to code. However, I ended up not posting enough quizzes in the platform I created, and only now I decided to concentrate on it and create more quizzes.

Since the beginning of November, I've been trying to attract more users using a few facebook accounts (3 to be more precise with 2k+ friends each). I use each of those accounts to invite people to like my page, in which the quizzes are listed, and then get them to use my app. Some of the people I invited are using my app, and some of them are sharing the results, as expected. But it seems that the viral effect of those quizzes is gone, since facebook changed it's news feed algorithms. I noticed that this kind of quizz is not appearing on my timeline anymore.

Now I'm worried that I might be a bit late in this run, since I'm not getting enough people to use the quizz. What do you guys think? Do you have any tip on how to attract more users, and maybe get them to share more often ?

Ok, I haven't updated this in while, but I decided to come back. I was bit disappointed for not getting any replies, but now I understand that newbies journeys are usually not very interesting. However, I'm applying everything I learned here, and I'm starting to see results. The quizzes are having the viral effect I expected, and I'm having almost 1k users using the app everyday. It's not a lot, but it's a beginning. I definitely wanna grow it, and I've seen other people having amazing results with this kind of content.

Right now I'm simply using massplanner to automate group posting, and that, besides people coming from clicks on the results that were shared by other users, is my main source of traffic. I'm using adsense to monetize that traffic, but I'm not making enough money yet.

Honestly, any input would be great. I would be happy to share more information about this journey with you guys too. I'm not trying to be spoon fed, or anything like that. I'm just using this experience to learn as much as can. And hopefully I'll be able to help other people who are also just starting their journeys like me.

Not significant at all right now. It's less than a dollar per day. Currently the quizzes are only available in Portuguese. I'm translating them into two additional languages (English and Spanish). I think that this will help me to grow the number of daily users. Once I start to get an average of more than 1k users per day I'll probably try to promote products related to the content of the quiz. I'm also looking for other sources of traffic, such as Instagram and twitter.

The real problem right now is that this is becoming more and more time consuming. It's nearly impossible to code, promote, and create new quizzes alone. I have one friend helping me out with the coding part, but he can only do that at weekends.

By the way, the quizzes are not real quizzes. They simply use facebook data to generate the results. These are some of the websites that promote this type of pseudo quiz:

This website only uses alexa ranking and some other stats to estimate the revenues. But even if we put a 50% margin of error here, we still have pretty impressing numbers.

Seriously, I might be wrong, but this looks like a gold mine. I have a fairly well coded system now, and a dedicated server to handle the traffic. I just need to translate it, add more quizzes, promote it, and see what happens. I'm working on this right now!

If you told all about your strategy and idea in details, I'll be helpful for me. Thanks a lot for sharing.

For this week this is what I have planned:
- Finish translating the quizzes I currently have (23 of them)
- Create a facebook page for the English and the Spanish speaking audiences
- Post on targeted groups with mass planner
- Reach a minimum of 1k users per day

For this month:
- Reach the number of at least 100 quizzes published
- Buy a few proxies and scale up the group publishing strategy
- Find other sources of traffic for this kind of content

I work with online marketing for a agency. And I see nametests.com and what-character-are-you.com popping up in Google Analytics account all over the board. First I thought that nametests.com was a site where people could generate baby names for their kids and stuff and that what-character-are-you.com was a site that did exactly what the domain name said. I've been seeing these domains for months now.

Today, after work, I sat down and checked them out. And I see they are quiz sites!

And now I've been sitting here trying to find some scripts or clones of these sites so I could set one up my self.

I've found two types of quiz sites.
#1. Where you ask questions and people answer and get to an answer page with results at the end ... and are asked to share. (Example: quizly.io, playbuzz.com)
#2. Where you ask a question and push a button, and FB analyzes the FB profile and match you up with a friend on the answer page, and serving a entertaining answer ... and ask you to share. (Example: nametests.com, what-character-are-you.com, vonvon.me, heroquizz.com, upfriendly.com, app.getvalentine.com and captainquizz.com)

I've found scripts to do #1 (both mentioned above in this thread) but no scripts to do #2?
And as I read this thread I understand that you have managed to code a solution to #2?

The closest I've come to a solution to #2 is reading about
five.com (site not working now), labs.five.com (site not working now), applymagicsauce.com and wolfram.com... I've also emailed some companies asking about this. One I emailed was iguazu.co.uk that I think is behind captainquizz.com ... The technology some of these sites (applymagicsauce.com and wolfram.com) has are perhaps overkill? Aka, not what I'm looking for? Could you spill your beans a bit here? What I need is just a simple FB app isn't it? Could you share some more details about this, please.

Regarding your translation problems: I see other sites like nametests.com has a Multilingual feature, a drop down where you can translate to any language. Couldn't you use a auto translater like that as well?

Yes, I'd say that applymagicsauce and wolfram are overkills. Applymagicsauce apparently analyses the pages you like, and part of your personal info, to compare that with a huge database. That analysis can provide a relatively precise result about your personality. That's not what any of those apps do. Some of them are completely random, and some have algorithms that are a bit more advanced in terms of what they analyse to generate the results.

I was generating completely random results in the beginning, but that wasn't working well. So I decided to create an algorithm to at least try to identify close friends, and filter those friends by gender when needed. The problem is that Facebook does not allow you to access a lot of information about the user's friends through their API, so you have to keep finding ways to overcome that limitation.

Regarding the translation: It's a bit more complicated than it looks like, because the results are not plain html pages. They actually are images dynamically generated on the server, so all the texts are written on the actual images. To translate them automatically you have to use an API. So far I only considered using google translator API, but the translation is not very reliable and requires some changes in my code that I don't have time to do right now. So I decided to manually translate the games to English and Spanish, which is not difficult for me. I'm almost done with that. Now I just need to start promoting the quizzes for the new audiences. The main problem I have right now is actually time. I wanna grow this as fast as I can. But I'll probably need more people helping me in order to actually do that.

How many quizzes are you planning to have? And where do you find to compose a quiz? Also, when are you planning to scale this ? Why not create 100 pva Facebook accounts?

At least 100 quizzes by the end of this month. 100 pva Facebook accounts would be too much, that's not necessary. I'll probably create or buy some accounts soon.

I think the better way to do your promotion isn't to buy PVA accounts and do it yourself, contact big page (humor etc..) and ask them for a post with your quizz link, you will pay 20-30$ but that can make your quizz viral.

I've been experimenting with quizes for a while and earned like 4$ when I test posted the link to 100 facebook groups.. was planning to scale up and add more quizes but I didn't. best way to promote your quizes is posting to local facebook groups with lots of users. ex: new york news
