Is it better to test Facebook ad interest keywords individually or in combination? My ads have been performing poorly lately, and I want to test them out.

You should try both approaches: start with individual keywords to see which perform best, then test combinations of the top-performing ones to optimize reach and performance.

Test individually first to see which interests work, then combine the strong ones to scale and lower costs.

Testing individually works best at the start it shows you which interests actually perform.
After you find the winners, you can combine them.

You should change your advertising strategy. Ineffective ads should be stopped. Test new campaigns and new ad samples, focusing on new target audiences to see the results. Maintaining ineffective ads will only cost you more without yielding any results.

It’s better to test interest keywords individually first in separate ad sets to clearly see what works.
Once you find strong individual interests, combine them cautiously to build layered audiences and scale.
Mixing too many interests at the start can dilute your results and make it harder to pinpoint what’s driving performance.

Usually I will do it by group, each group is a type of keyword
And add 1 group without setting any keywords and using pixel

I think you should test each interest individually first. Meta will push budget to whichever interest is more effective, so testing multiple interests in the same ad group often hides which interests are really effective. Once you've tested, you can see which interests are doing well, so just work with them.

First you can test them individually to see which keywords work. Then combine them to scale up because FB prioritizes broad targeting.

Use advantage plus and upload multiple niche-specific creatives. This will help you identify which interests and angles perform best.

when you throw many interests into the same adset, it will automatically choose the 1,2 strongest interests and ignore the rest, making the whole group's results bad. so separate each interest one by one, you can see very clearly which ones have low cpa and are not stable, to kill them early and then put the budget into the right file that is responding well

i think let's start with individual keyword, then combine which performed well, also divide budget into small campaigns first to test performance

It's usually best to test both. Running interest keywords individually helps you see which ones perform well on their own, while combining them can sometimes stabilize performance or reduce CPM.

For optimal results, begin by isolating and testing each interest as a separate audience segment. This methodical approach provides unambiguous performance data, revealing exactly which specific interests drive engagement and conversions. Once you've identified these top-performing interests individually, you can then strategically layer or combine them into more powerful, consolidated audiences. This 'isolate-then-integrate' strategy eliminates guesswork and ensures your combined audiences are built on a foundation of proven, high-intent targets.

Test interests separately for cleaner data, then combine winners. Broad targeting also helps when performance drops.

I think you should combine a few keywords, so the ad will be distributed to the target audience more clearly. You don't need too many but you should choose 3-5 keywords.

It’s generally more effective to test interests individually first, because it helps you clearly see which audiences perform well and which ones waste budget. Once you find 2–3 strong interests, you can combine them into broader ad sets for scale. Testing them separately gives clean data; combining too early makes it harder to know what’s actually working.

During testing, it is a tactical mistake to combine multiple interests into the same ad group. Meta's mechanism will automatically prioritize and pour budget into the 1-2 strongest interests, leading to data noise and obscuring the true performance of other interests. The optimal solution is to test each interest separately. This allows you to clearly see which interests are bringing in a low and stable CPA. From there, you can definitively eliminate the underperforming interests and focus all your budget on the "file" of audiences that are responding best, ensuring the campaign is optimized at the highest level.

Try each keyword individually first, and then combine them carefully to optimize efficiency. Meta will automatically allocate the budget to the groups that perform better, so if you mix too many interests right from the start, Meta's machine learning algorithm can get confused making it difficult to determine effectiveness.
