Is it better to test Facebook ad interest keywords individually or in combination? My ads have been performing poorly lately, and I want to test them out.

You should change your advertising strategy. Ineffective ads should be stopped. Test new campaigns and new ad samples, focusing on new target audiences to see the results. Maintaining ineffective ads will only cost you more without yielding any results.

Usually I will do it by group, each group is a type of keyword
And add 1 group without setting any keywords and using pixel

I think you should test each interest individually first. Meta will push budget to whichever interest is more effective, so testing multiple interests in the same ad group often hides which interests are really effective. Once you've tested, you can see which interests are doing well, so just work with them.

First you can test them individually to see which keywords work. Then combine them to scale up because FB prioritizes broad targeting.

when you throw many interests into the same adset, it will automatically choose the 1,2 strongest interests and ignore the rest, making the whole group's results bad. so separate each interest one by one, you can see very clearly which ones have low cpa and are not stable, to kill them early and then put the budget into the right file that is responding well

I think you should combine a few keywords, so the ad will be distributed to the target audience more clearly. You don't need too many but you should choose 3-5 keywords.
