I never actually had my own application but I've purchased advertising space on other popular applications and it's a hit or miss situation.
As for owning your own application it can be profitable because you can charge other advertisers for advertising space, you can run your own ads, or if you really hit the jackpot you can even have corporate sponsors. It all comes down to how many users you can amass.
You can hire a php programmer to create an app, or there are also firms that specialize in creating facebook apps (facebookster.com).

one of my friends is working on this, we found at some guy that is making 1 million bucks per week (yes no mistakes here) using this concept, the main point is to redirect the users to some cpa offers in somehow, as chimaera says you can post your ads and that kind of stuff there, the only thing here is that you need to create a good aplication that claims too much atention, some online game perhaps, i will be working on my own app in a couple of months stay tuned

I did have a FB app at one point, and that bad boy was VIRAL! I couldn't believe the speed at which that stupid thing spread. It worked for a while, but when my cpa account got banned, I just stopped using the app. I'll see if I still have the source anywhere. If I do, I'll up it for BHW members.

I've got a pretty kickass app I'm working on. Should be viral as hell and also be extremely brandable by mainstream companies (due to it's stickiness). Groundworks laid and am interviewing a couple of Indian firms to build it as it's programatically more complex than the norm.
