I've had the same experience as others have noted. My ads on FB typically return zero conversions. Meanwhile, the exact same ads will do very well on Bing, Google, etc. On FB, I see a ton of clicks and nothing as far as results are concerned.
I have concluded that FB ads are only good for making your product top of mind - nothing more. Since I can spend as little as $5 per day on a campaign and still see upwards of 70k impressions (paying for 5 or so clicks that I know will not convert), I just try to make my ads full of information about my product. It's like buying a billboard on a busy street. You're just planting a seed. That's all.
So, I don't think that FB ads are 'useless' but I certainly won't be dropping major money on any campaigns and expecting conversions with them any time soon.

Anybody try using fb ads to get more real likes instead of web traffic? How well does it work for u?
I have a friend that tried it and his likes went up but now im wondering if those likes are fb bots..

So wait a minute; I'm not sure if I understand this completely... Did Facebook themselves run a bot to click on peoples' ads to drive up the advertisers' costs, and hence increase Facebook's own revenue?

They were fake. My point being, why pay $25 for 50 fake fans when you can pay $5 for 1,000. Facebook ads weren't bringing any real people either.

I too tried Facebook advertising and was really disappointed with the results. On top of that, they have so many restrictions on what you can and can't advertise its ridiculous.

I'm just glad that I was able to get $100's of dollars in free advertising back when visa ran their special of getting $100 vouchers for joining their fan page and installing their app. Had I been paying myself the ROI was nearly 1:1. Which I thought at the time was a complete waste of time when after reading that article and the comments here I now see that I should have been lucky. In reality though my service at the time as $100 so if you think about it the conversion rate was complete crap when compared to other advertising platforms.

I think fb is still good to ads some product or gain ranking....

Facebook has 2 models of advertising, one is base on clicks (CPC) and the other is base on impression (CPM)
I believe these guys weren't advertising much on facebook, because if you are going to run a big campaign you need to switch to CPM ,as you will just need to be worry about your conversion and no matter how bad your CTR is, your ads will display and if even you receiving 1 million fraud clicks, it will not charge you a cent as you pay only for impression...
So usually facebook ads works like this, You create ads base on CPC to find out how they perform and then switch them to CPM ...

I wouldn't touch Facebook stock with a 10 foot pole even before this story came out. They valued the company at $100b when they were only earning about $1b profits annually. To top it off, Everything online is migrating from PC screen to mobile phone screen and that's bad for ad revenue.
