Should I destroy Facebook or only change settings given the privacy matters with the platform? I do enjoy scanning updates from friends and family, but I’m not sure the security risk is deserving it.

Change your settings regardless of what you decide. Make sure no apps are allowed on your Facebook. (This can be accessed in settings and under Apps). These love to gleam data.

Also, never post anything on Facebook you wouldn't want archived or sold off. Facebook and privacy are the furthest thing from one another and there's no point in pretending they actually care about your privacy. I personally recommend you stop using personal Facebooks and use a fake identity (your real friends and family will know who you are anyway) if updates are so important. Don't post anything on it, pictures included.
