Best of luck I tried this strategy for a while. Most would get swiped up as fast as I could find them and if they didn't they'd get killed about 3 minutes after I registered them.

Niche relevant web 2.0, especially in some niches like this one, are pretty much impossible. If you plan to use them for linkbuilding, then I can assure you, that no niche relevancy is required. For example Tumblrs have links from all over the place pretty much all the time. Just get some brandable web 2.0 with decent metrics and repurpose it for your niche.
