Expired domains = Easy Google Discovery?

Was just scrolling through the Google feed on Chrome for Android and noticed a local pizza shop was writing clickbait news articles. When I clicked the title I was presented with a very very ad heavy website.

I checked the domain on archive.org and it shows as an actual pizza joint back in 2025, then it dropped and there's no archive for 2026. The site is just filled with spun news articles from other major news outlets, probably really easy to automate with a little AI.

Questions:

1. Have you tried using expired domains and get quick results on Google Discovery?
2. Have you seen this too?
3. Is there any way to see if a domain has previously been featured on there? New domains usually dont show up in my experience.

Yeah I’ve seen this a lot lately.
It’s basically expired domains getting reused for quick Discover traffic. Since the domain already has some history/backlinks, Google sometimes pushes it faster than a fresh site. Doesn’t always work though, pretty hit or miss.
The AI/spun news + heavy ads combo is everywhere right now. Most of these sites don’t last long, they just ride the wave and burn out.
As for checking Discover history, there’s no real way unless you own the site (Search Console). Otherwise you can only guess from traffic spikes or old data.
And yeah, fresh domains almost never hit Discover, that’s why people use aged ones.

Does this pizza shop domain have a GBP attached? These are the flavour of the month (several months tbh) for expired domains currently - they're all over Discover and igaming SERPs.

Wow this is new to me at least. Might have to try setting something like that up myself. Even if it burns out in a few months it has to be pretty profitable? Doubt they only have that one site.

Makes me think: Would Google AdSense penalize your account for spun/AI content? What ad providers would be suitable for such a site, or rather collection of sites?

Yeah I just checked and it has a GBP with real reviews, images and the correct location for the pizza shop. As well as all the directory profiles like Yelp, Tripadvisor, yellow pages etc. Is a proper legit GBP the common factor for all these sites maybe? It's the first time I come across such a site in discover but if one is doing it I bet there are tons of them Have you built anything similar?

Feels like a news site would bring lots of clicks but probably not the best RPM. Maybe Crypto news or YMYL would do better but would they even promote that in Discover? Kinda confused as to why they are doing it in Swedish instead of for example German (85M population instead of 11M).

Yeah it works short-term if the domain still has trust + some brand signals, but most burn out fast once Google recalibrates.
Seen tons of these churn sites, especially on local/business expired domains with some leftover authority.
No real way to check past Discover traffic, best proxy is checking old organic spikes + brand queries in GSC/ahrefs before it dropped.

Seeing as powerful expired domains at least used to rank well on Google, they also come with a hefty price tag. My thinking is that in order to get on Google Discover it should not require that powerful of a domain, right? I'm sure the domain I found was just dropped and snatched for the standard domain registration fee and not from domain auctions.

Would love to hear from someone who has actually tried this, one domain or at scale. Did Google not just recently drop an update for their Discover algorithm? But the algorithm has to be more like the feed in social media rather than how it works for ranking in Google Search?

It's a churn and burn project using expired domain and AI rewritten content. It could've been automated. I'm sure the owner has multiple such news sites competing with each other, leaving genuine sites out of reach.

Right. I mean, this is black hat, in the eyes of Google, shady shit. Feels similar to the old spam that worked in SERPS but now its another Google platform/algorithm that I feel is completely different and honesty a bit more difficult to manage/update (for Google).

I've been working with SEO for 15 years but always been interested in this feed type shit. My sites are certainly not qualified but would love to know the ins and outs.

Yeah, I’ve seen aged domains move insanely fast. Had one repurposed expired domain hit #1 for a mid-competition keyword in about a week, and it actually held top positions for nearly a year. So it’s not always a short spike and burn, if the domain is clean and the rebuild isn’t too off-topic.

I would not mind if @Nargil and @jimbobo2779 offered their thoughts here.

It's basically this. GMB + some decent backlinks and existing traffic on top of it and you are golden.

However, try to win such a domain for less than $3K - 5K at auctions - impossible.

If I have ever said in the past that the domain prices on auctions are ridiculous, it was nothing compared to what is going on now.

Also, this isn't black hat. You registered domain, posted content and rank. Black hat would be hacking an existing GMB site and then doing this stuff. This is grey hat at the most.

Thanks for your input in this subject! Yeah I just didn't want to post it in the white hat forum because it still involves buying an expired domains and leveraging its authority.

Do you really need that powerful domain in order to rank on discover? If the domains are $3-$5k I doubt it will be profitable? Doesn't feel feasible to buy such expensive domains, especially since Google updates their algorithms and could tank your site in a month or a few.

Like this piece of crap few days ago - antoniabistro.com

It has zero decent baclinks, small domain, doesn't even have GMB, but it has like 30 traffic in Ahrefs. Sold for 1150 USD.

Do not expect even the shitties of the shit get sold for less than a few hundred. And even then you have to be proper lucky. This is a saturated market.

I don't have much experience with Google Discovery but do find that a clean expired domain will reindex itself without any need for backlinks or anything, just a website putting on it will be enough in my recent experience.

This method might be effective in the short term if the domain still retains some credibility and brand signal. However, that advantage usually doesn't last because when Google updates its system, the effectiveness quickly diminishes. In fact, many websites that experienced a surge in traffic then experienced a rapid decline, especially expired domains in local or business sectors that still retained some old credibility. Furthermore, there's no way to accurately check past Discover traffic. The most feasible approach is to review periods of sudden spikes in organic traffic.

Yes this is a real thing and it works because Google Discover caches the trust signals from the domain's previous life. A local pizza shop that had a real website, real visitors, real engagement - Google already had positive signals for that domain. When someone picks it up and starts publishing content, Discover can start showing it way faster than a fresh domain because the trust is already there.
The local business angle is actually the smartest way to find these. Local restaurants, shops, small services that closed down - their domains often have clean history, real local backlinks, Google Business Profile history attached. Way better than expired domains from spammy SEO sites.
For checking if a domain was previously on Discover - there's no direct way to see this but you can get clues. Check archive.org for traffic patterns, look at the backlink profile for local news mentions or community sites, check if the old Google Business Profile still shows up. If the domain had consistent organic traffic before it dropped, Discover history is likely.
The play you described with spun news is the lazy version that'll probably get slapped eventually. The smarter version is finding those expired local domains and putting actual decent content on them.

I’ve seen this a lot too. When a domain expires, when a site expired there is often a grace period where some of that trust carries over. In this case, the pizza site already had a legit business profile, citations, etc., so it’s not starting from zero.
Once they start publishing content consistently, Google crawls and indexes it faster because of it's existing credibility . Also If the headlines are clickbait enough to get good CTR, Discover might pick it up for a while.
But it doesn’t last. The content doesn’t match the original intent, quality is usually weak, Google re-evaluates it… and boom, it drops hard.

Expired domains can definitely carry some old-school authority that makes them way more likely to hit google discovery quickly, especially for this kind of content play
