[Experiment] Creating authority through 301.

One of my clients has a fairly new site and big goals so before I start a backlinking process I want to give the site some authority and PR.

Therefore I am going to buy some domains and 301 them. Here is a break down of the domains, they all have clean backlinks:

Domain 1: Has a keyword in name. PR 3.
Domain 2: Has a keyword in name. PR 3.
Domain 3: Has a keyword in name. PR 3.
Domain 4: Has a keyword in name. PR 3.
Domain 5: Not related. PR 8
Domain 6: Not related is 17 years old though
Domain 7: Exact match for one of the keywords. Brand new

Once I buy these I am going to do a 301 redirect from each.

Do you think the age/PR will transfer? Do you think current SERPS will increase? Let me know what your predictions are or any advice you may give.

I will then 301 all of them to the site in question and let you know what happens.

Used to work very well earlier. My last experiment doing something failed miserably.i have 40k links to my site from over 1k domains but I don't get any traffic at all. It has not helped my rankings
 
It depends on what you are redirecting. What were the domains like? Did they have a higher PR than your main site?
 
Were all the domains indexed and not hacked in the past?

Are you sure domain 5 is PR8?

Are you going to create some backlinks to the redirects to tell Google they're becoming popular again?

If so then I think you'll see a huge boost, but I don't believe it will stay. Your clients site would likely drop a while after. Maybe you sohuld setup a second site to use this tehcnique on while building the main site.
 
You would be putting your client's site at risk.

A much better move would be setting up sites around those domains and every now and then - a fresh post to your client's site.

Yes its a PR8, not hacked and not cheap. I have just read your blog on this technique, nice. So you think that my clients site would be penalized after doing this?

So you are basically saying that you cannot create authority through a 301 redirect and if you do you will be penalized?

Can't be sure it will be penalized, but can't be sure it won't either.

A 301 is telling Google that this site has permanently moved and in essence moves the site to the new domain.

I just think you're asking for punishment and a very unhappy client if you 301 domains to their business website. You're better creating a niche relevant site and 301ing them all to that domain which then links to your business domain. Or as I said earlier, a second website for churn and burn.

Either way, keep us updated on what happens after the 301.
 
Could you not 301 them to a site you've set up to mimic your clients site (i.e. not exactly the same but in the same niche, etc) and see how that does, and if it does okay then 301 that to your clients site - or 301 that and the others to your clients site.

I guess even if it works you might get caught at a later update, but updates can blow up any site anyway so at least you can blame it on Google then.

2. Build a one page site of about 3,000 original relevant content. This domain I just bought is PR5 and has a keyword in the URL. I am going to have two anchors within the content both pointing to my homepage. One is going to be brand name, the other a keyword. I am also going to backlink this site.

I am hoping this will pass some PR to my clients site, and rank number 1 for the exact match

Lets see.... any advice is welcome!

I think Google may only take the anchor text for the first link it finds and it will disregard the other. However I believe there is a trick. If your domain is www.example.com then for the second link use the url www.example.com/# I believe Google detects this as another URL but it is still a homepage link.
 
I know you are set on using 301 redirects but I definitely highly advise against doing so on a client's website. You risk ruining your client's site and your own business.

You are seriously asking for an unnatural link notice using the method you outlined.

I saw that you are going to buy a PR8, if it is a "legit" PR8, than you have thousands of dollars at your disposal.

With such a large budget there are much safer ways to achieve your goal.

A PR8 could be used to rent links from and would be extremely profitable.

Thanks for the advice - I have since changed my approach as you can see from my post above. This looks a lot safer.

I am saying that you can do that... today. When Google picks up on it, your client's site will tank, you will lose him as a client, and he might spread the word of his experience thus harming your business in general.

On the other hand, having legit sites in the same niche can be good for a lot more than just posting (think 3 way link exchanges - you give people links from those relevant sites, and they link to your client's site).
