So I want to learn a language, and learn it well. At the moment it's a toss up between learning to develop .net apps or web development, such as PHP.

I've got a good understanding of VB.net (when I say good, I don't mean I can write it fluently) and I will be studying it next year anyway with my course.

But I'd like to start making my own wordpress plugins etc, and really harness the power of web scripting.

Basically it comes to down to which I can make more money out of, I'm not hear to lie :)

If you 're good, you can make money even by programming for printers in Postscript ;)

So, your main problem is to get really good. There 's competition out there.

I understand. I was really looking for opinions on what PHP is fully capable of. Since I will be studying .net next year.
Otherwise, I'll just stick with mastering VB.

master .NET , then progress to PHP -> combine .net with php & earn a life time :)

stick with vb mate master it and you can do some pretty amazing shit... i spend alot of my time in IM programming bots in VB to automate simple tasks that would otherwise take me a few mins. The more i automate the more i earn for less work...simples

Thanks for your reply! Could you give an example as to how one could link the two gether and why?

Thanks for your reply! I think mastering VB would be the way to go. Can I ask what sorts of things have you automated using vb?

Why not start with C#? VB.net is actually a great language (a lot of the hate for it comes from those VB6 days lol) however, I found the community, support and the general availability of snippets/code far greater @ C#.

Profitability is another question all together... I think mastering PHP is a little less harder than mastering VB... Not sure about this though. So, FMHPOV, you might be better off by getting into PHP if only because of opportunity cost. PHP is not the best scripting language around (IMHO), but of course it is very widespread, universally supported, has a large number of libraries and is very capable of tackling any task that you throw at it. There are some (minor) negatives, which mostly come down to syntax, parsing and unintelligent design of some blocks. Again, this shouldn't really concern you all that much as PHP is and will be a great language to develop in.

Cheers hope this helps out

proxy grabbing/testing, account creation, forum posting, youtube stuff (lots can be done with you tube), twitter posting, article rewriting, article scraping ... the list goes on...you name it it can be done :)

Thanks for the reply man. Why I'm choosing VB.net is because I will be receiving lectures, have a massive ass textbook and being assessed on it next year. That way I'm going to have all the support I need.
Fyo, folks, im not trying to create the next xrumer, but more off using my knowledge to create tools to outsource things, that can be turned into money making, or making smaller end apps for people (wp plugins)
Cheers again

Sounds good man, guess I can kiss all that expensive shit good bye haha.

You can check on sites like elance and determine which programming language is in demand from the buyers and learn those languages.

.NET & php:

Create a software which does tasks & the users also have information on it on a website. Thats a type of combination

If you decide to learn PHP, consider Killerphp.com's video tutorials. They're good to start with and have some good idea about php. You can get them for free just by doing some googling.

Looking at what I can do with php, and ive realised i can do shopping carts and create client dashboards etc. This would be great for small businesses, and more practical in terms of banking from coding, and in a higher demand.

php is the best i learned asp.net but it is not as helpfull as php in internet marketing :P

u know a mixture is the best. i mean desktop applications are wicked cool and sell faster. If you could create a next generation app which utilizes features from web (using php) and desktop too, it would be awesome.

the interaction in both languages makes it better. Plus if you know php you can design websites etc. on custom requirements.

If you're learning vb.net at uni, I'd stick with learning .NET. Once you know a .NET language you can use them for many other types of development (web/phone/etc).

You can use .net for phones? As in phone apps? Thought android was java and iphone was xcode or something like that.

play with both and see which one you prefer or use both it doesn't matter what the languageis in the end but the skills of the person who uses it in the end
