Engagement Rate

Hi guys,

im currently playing around coding some stuff... and at the moment im calculating engagement rates, my formula is (overall likes + overall comments) / media count / follower count * 100 ... so far so good but what im wondering about, what do you guys consider good/semi good/semi bad/bad engagement rates?

Is everything above 5% good? Can you give me a hint how you rate Engagement in those categories:

good: ...%
semigood : ...%
semibad: ...%
bad: ...%

I think you slightly need to re-consider your question.

Engagement naturally decrease with the increase of followers. For new accounts, where I engage with other people in the niche, my posts can have 100%+ engagement. In general for marketing, the big brands, that do not follow other accounts and like other posts, expect 0.5% engagement.

So I think you need to add in the size of the account and what kind of engagement the account is doing.

Your formula is not totally precise, lets say all your users both like and comment, then your engagement would be 200%. Furthermore, people can comment more than once, and you can comment back, essentially the two of us could drive your engagement to infinity. I advice you when looking at engagement to only look at the likes. It will be more useful for you and others if you write something along the lines of: 5% liking engagement and 20 comments on average per post.

Isn't the size of the account already in my formula by dividing through the followercount? The only way of knowing the engagement the account is doing is to use maybe the Follower/Following ratio? But how would you implement that into the formula?

Too be fair, that is a good point. It's easy to manipulate the engagement by commenting multiple times. But is having a 200% engagement a bad thing? I mean, you could have 100 followers but 200 Likes on a picture aswell.

And last but not least, how would you categorize the liking engagement into 4 groups? What would you consider a good/bad percentage

Yes, it is in the followers number, but it is easy to receive 10 likes on your first photo and only have 1 follower. In my opinion, you can't really say you have 1k% engagement.

As sais engagement rating depends on the size of the account. The bigger the account is the lower engagement is considered good in my opinion.

If you want to set your sights toward achieving success like some of Instagram's big brands, then you can aim for the same numbers they get. Sabel Harris of Track Maven, who put together a big report last fall about Fortune 500 companies on Instagram, notes that big brands receive an average of 37 total likes and comments for every 1,000 followers.

You can extrapolate this to fit your company's following. Multiply your followers by 0.037.

If you've got 1,000 followers, aim for 37 likes and comments
If you've got 500 followers, aim for 19 likes and comments.
If you've got 5,000 followers, aim for 185 likes and comments.

They also refer as 1 comment per photo for each 100 likes. Of course this should be an average, you can get much more for a glowing photo with multiple hashtags and depending on your engangement with followers.
