So are EMD's basically worthless now? I have a brand domain, but I was thinking of purchasing an EMD domain just for shuffling traffic back to my brand domain. I was thinking of putting up regular posts on the EMD domain, and linking them back to my brand domain, is this pointless though? Will the EMD not even rank in Google? Will I have to create backlinks and such for it? Or will quality content, and the fact that it is an EMD be enough to get a it a good rank?

It's not exactly worthless but you can't rank it anymore with just 5 articles... If the content is good and interesting and providing valuable information to the reader, google will rank it...

Will it be only enough to rank well that depends on your comp and no EMDs are not worthless they do work, just be careful of any future manual review as this looks like a obvious footprint imho.

Well my keyword gets about 16,000 searches a month..I will be writing quality content on the EMD..I just wonder how much of a boost in ranking the EMD will give me, and if it's even worth the effot

They still work just got to be careful not to over optimize your on site stuff, don't use the keyword in the url slug for instance.

if you get the EMD to hit top 100 no doubt you'll see something, again its best to protect your brand domain, as this is just so obvious for anyone to see and know whats going on.

Will search engines still see it as leaving a footprint if I don't link my site back, but I just watermark my pictures?

I say EMDs are okay, of course they work as nearly any domain will. But unless you're targeting very micro niches, find something broad and fit the keyword into the domain. ie; instead of micro "blackchevy" you'd create "myblacktrucks" or something to that affect.

lol OP wants to know this,
EMD linking to > Brand domain = Ranking Boosting for Brand domain

Basically a "PBN" pagerank manipulation G guidelines yada yada

EMDs don't give you the sort of advantage in the SERPs that they used to. Personally, I've completely moved away from them. The only sites of mine that got hit at the last update/refresh were EMDs. I think SEO is simpler without them, because for sure they can contribute towards an over optimization penalty.

EMDs still rank like a charm if everything done properly, I know a few examples in very competitive niche.

With good content, great On-page SEO and some quality backlinks you'll rank. Your biggest enemy is overoptimization and thin content.
