You have to be careful with EMDs. It is easy to get caught in an over optimization penalty these days.

EMD's still work, you just need to be careful with your URL structure and keyword anchors. You can get in trouble for over optimization a lot easier now.

Exact Match Domain is dead on 2012 itself.
