I want to create an eCommerce site. I have looked around but I have yet to find a guide that tells me how to do it.

I have around 1500$-2000$ to invest.

Anybody have some good ideas on what to sell?

sell: Jewellery, clothing, watches....
specialization would be advantages

hi mate,

it depends what you want to sell.
where r u from?

do you have e commerce solution already?

e commerce solution is very important and it will affect your work in the feature so its quite important to make a right choice. pm me if need any advice or design , development

what you going to sell? I have a website if you want some advice.

If you're looking to sell it yourself here's some things I might do in your situation:
Setup a an online store. Whether you have to pay a monthly fee or if you outright buy the software (or use free software) & just pay for credit card processing.

Setup with Google Base (Froogle). If you have a lot of products you can bulk upload your product line with images/prices/etc linking back to your site. This is free & I get about 1,000 targeted visitors a month from this method to my small store that offers not as desirable merchandise (discontinued, etc). Some people don't like it, I love it & it's free.

Setup with Pricegrabber. You'll have to have a bulk upload file, but it's a pretty popular comparison shopping site & you pay nothing up front (if I remember correctly) & you pay once a month for transaction. I think the poercentage is somewhere around 5% + $1 that they take. A little steep, but I've used that as well & it's worked well for me, too.

Setup on eBay. In the past when I sold merchandise with a different supplier, I would sell lower on ebay - then refer the customers to my website for future purchases for higher priced items. This worked pretty well when I offered name brand merchandies. Last I remember I thought the only way to drive to an eBay store was to promote it through an active auction. I could be wrong, but I think that's the way it used to be. I tried it a little long ago so this might help you.

Use prestashop, buy a premium theme, and list your items. There's a slight learning curve but shouldn't be too difficult to manage (I'm always an advocate for Prestashop since it's the platform I used for my eCommerce store and did pretty well while I had it up and running).

But whatever you use, make sure you get payment processing figured out now rather than later.

Magento is the best Ecommerce script IMO

And about selling you have to do some research about it

Where you want to sell , local or worldwide ?

In start Local is best and for local check out demands of people and rank your site and earn some bucks

Can anyone recommend any books/ebooks to get a good overview of e commerce?

Try out this book "E-commerce Get It Right!" by Ian daniel, It might be useful for You!

The eCommerce site is the easy part, finding suppliers with good enough margins isn't. Find a niche, find suppliers and then begin setting up your site. To many idiots do it the other way around.

OP

Many of the things that you are going to find will be useless. Most books and info is really shit when it comes to e-commerce for some reason or another.

I am creating a membership site for e commerce/SEO. If your interested in some materials I got some freshly written stuff for you if your willing to provide some feedback.
