eBay vs. ecommerce

I just started my own e-commerce ventures. What I had trouble with was legalizing the business and creating an official LLC. It was basically a headache but necessary for a startup

NOTE: This was only trouble because I was low on funds, and I'm not going to get a loan for this right now because of current financial problems.

Getting a supplier was also a pain in the neck, but worth it because I got great prices from the supplier I chose after cycling and researching through countless suppliers. The site was easy to optimize because of e-commerce scripts so that wasn't hard. Lack of traffic is the hardest part, but I am currently finding unique ways to drive extremely targetted visitors. All in all, I have busted my balls this month to create a site that is currently selling two high priced products a day (about $20 profits daily), and I am proud of it. E-Commerce was a headache compared to eBay, but I got lucky because I totally skipped doing hard keyword research.

Just my 2cents.

Did you find your supplier by contacts or via website?
Are you dropshipping by any chance, or do you have the product in possession?

focus your efforts on your own site..ebay is going downhill. I know a lot of people that will not touch them any more.

Found supplier by a website (dropship blueprint and salehoo). We are currently dropshipping. The product is priced around 300-700 bucks. I incorporated in Massachusetts and everything cost me around 1 grand. I'm still in college so that's a lot for me, and if you can, incorporate in delaware or somewhere else extremely cheap (if you are going for an LLC). I assume you want to start a long-term business, which is why you should legalize your business and that's what I did. You just need to make sure you don't half-ass things. I highly recommend blueprint black edition. Search for it I saw it in member downloads. That should really help you get going. It gives you hope too because they make it seem very doable: and it is! Good Luck!

What do you guys use for customer check out?

From my personal experience.
Here is my Analogy of eBay/ecommerce website

ebay : your own store

IS TO

getting prison raped : owning pamela anderson

Each come with its own set of problems, and stress. Neither is "Easy" But id rather have problmes while doing pam anderson instead of having problems while getting done by big bubba in the can.

Not being in control:Total Control

Ecommerce For The WIN.

I'm stuck between deciding whether to focus my efforts on eBay or starting an ecommerce store.

With the new fees and non-existent support for sellers on eBay, I find it very discouraging. Not to mention that I would be putting my financial future in someone else's hands, and paying them a share of my profits for every sale.

On the other hand, I heard starting an online store is also relatively difficult. I'd have to learn about SEO, build a site, drive traffic, etc. I also heard it takes a long time to bring in profits.

If anyone has experience with either method or both, please let me know your experiences. Any advice is genuinely appreciated.

Thanks.
I used for a long time a similar site to ebay but one targetted to my local country. Its great but the fee's are a pain.

On the other hand, I prefer ebay to opening your own e-store. Mainly because, unless you have ideas in mind in how to rank highly in google for your store and get turn-over, no one will find you. The beauty of ebay is you have a constant, massive audience.

Ebay also gives you a tonne of authority. On Ebay you can pretend to be an authority, even though you aren't :D go on there, and sound important, and people will believe you are important. Its harder to convince people in a ecommerce shop you've set up because people don't have the buyers protection program like they do in ebay.

One idea may be to do both. Have incentives for choosing the offline shop (cheaper prices). This way you can get both markets :)

Why not do both... I have a eCommerce store through bigcommerce and there's a module in the control panel that allows me to add products of my choosing to ebay with a click of my mouse.
What im doing here is killing 2 birds with one stone. Ranking my eCommerce store in search engines and selling my products on ebay. All this through my control panel.

^ But you dont have total control...Why not say FUck ebay, setup a nice rep store and blast some links, Spin some SEO, and insert a live chat, hire a broke college kid to be your csr, sit back take a shit and watch the $$$ pile up

(if it were that easy...)

But on a serious note, eBay is very volitale at any minute your could be shut down.

IMO dont put all your eggs in ebay snatch. Spread em out so when ebay drops the deuce on u. Egg wont be on YOUR face.

It really isn't hard, it just requires a bit of money, which most eBay sellers do not have.

Most people get into eBay not to start a business or create a continual source of additional income, most people just need some extra bit of cash so they throw up a couple things they have onto eBay and hope for the best.

Starting an eCommerce business requires one main component, entrepreneurial spirit which will lead them to learning about making wise choices in this industry which include learning SEO and doing it yourself, or should you invest and tie your money up in this product or that product, how to do market research, how to hire the right person to design a website, etc. If everyone had the drive to do and learn these things, then there wouldn't be an eBay.

Another thing with the E-Commerce model is that you're going to have to assume all the risk. At the end of the day, your goal is not to make an E-Commerce site, or make a seller account, it's to make the most money.

So why don't you do both E-Commerce and eBay - cross reference each of them in the profile and you should be able to capitalize on the synergy.

It's really not that hard...
