eBay stops buying Adwords -> is immediately demoted in organic search.

It's just business, nothing more nothing less.

This happens everyday in other sectors, the carrot and stick of a relationship/negotiation. It just looks like Ebay got the stick - and are suffering the fallout.

Those leaks on pastebin by a former Google employee weren't lies then after all!

OP, You must totally do not understand B2C or B2B business, see my thread here to help you understand whats' situation in traffic for B2C company: http://www.blackhatworld.com/blackhat-seo/black-hat-seo/675044-my-case-study-testing-about-google-traffic-all-your-guys-reference.html

It might be the either case. It's a private company and google search is the best product the company has. It can do anything it wants to. If you don't like them, don't use them ( if you can).. </rant>
It's justified for leveling the playing field or justified for deranking them due to not paying as much in Adwords?

Being a private company doesn't make google untouchable. Just ask AT&T in the early 1980's.

Granted, different situation and times.

100% right, i tryed this myself, aded adwords only for one week, payed 1k and my #2 keywords ranked #1 in 24 hours.

It's easy when you got a billion dollar budget ;)

There's only till a certain limit that google can push it and act like arrogant fucks, and get away with it. one day they'll have to pay for their arrogance.

who knows someday they might be history :D Till then keep blackhatting them :D

LETS MAKE SOMETHING CLEAR -

Buying adwords does NOT help you rank higher. And not buying adwords does NOT get your site penalized. There is not 1 case study, 1 shred of proof, 1 *anything* that even remotely supports this idea. I rank in 14 different niches #1 and not once have I ever dropped a penny on adwords. Most of the people in my niches who buy adwords are the same people who DON'T rank organically in the SERPs. And this update had 0 effect on any of my rankings.

I understand the OP is a respected member on this forum.... but is anyone paying attention to what he actually wrote? This update rolled out literally days ago, and to claim it was an "adwords update" is beyond ridiculous. Especially when Matt Cutts himself said this was just another update targeting spammy sites.

I don't believe for a second that Google would do this out of mere corporate spite.

Ebay is worth about 60 billion.
Google is worth about >>> 460 billion.

In laymans terms, Google doesn't give a shit about Ebay. And Ebay was NOT penalized cause they stopped buying adwords. They got penalized because they had thousands upon thousands of thin, doorway pages... the EXACT TYPE of content that Google hates, cluttering up their SERPs.

Everyone know's that Ebay's adwords campaigns were a mess. They had ads showing up for terms like "Severed Head Sales" and "Vomit Sales". This is a 60 billion dollar company that has no idea how to use negative keywords! Then they have the nerve to bitch in public about adwords not being profitable? Well, no shit. And where thing's get REALLY IRONIC... is when you realize that their SEO strategy was 100xs worse than their adwords campaigns. Viewed in this context, by any objective, rational minded person, there is only *1* explanation for why Ebay lost their rankings. It's not magic. It's not voodoo. It's not some adwords conspiracy. Its because...

>>>> they are completely, comprehensively, and grossly incompetent. They were BEGGING for it.

They were doing something Google hated. Google released another major update.... and bye bye went Ebay. The point I'm making here is simple. If Ebay was competent and actually had a clue what they were doing, it would not matter 1 bit whether they were buying adwords or not. If they were doing proper SEO, they'd still have their rankings.

But they don't. And all of you Google haters, the same people who make most of your money thanks to G.... if you really despise them so much then go use Bing or Yahoo. Cause these Google bashing threads are beyond ridiculous. If ANYONE deserves to be bashed here it's EBAY, not Google.

You completely miss the point of this thread. Here is the summary in easy terms:

Ebay suddenly did not make any changes in their SEO strategy or
the way their internal pages are linked or the way they created the URLs.

If that were the case, they should have been penalized long ago,
it should not have been the result of Panda 4.0

One fine morning, google's engineers woke up and discovered that the URL structure of
one of the biggest and earliest sites on the internet is not right and it should be penalized.

And this is a coincidence that google's engineers realized this just when
Ebay decided to shut down their adwords campaign.

Stop drinking the Google KoolAid.

Ignore those kind of posts next time, they don't ever deserve a reply...

Going back on topic, I'm with Google this time. Ebay was doing something outside Google's guidelines and they got penalized, period.

However, I'll have to admit that there's a big coincidence in the timing between this update and the Ebay-Adwords divorce.

On which respected site does it say that eBay quit paying for Adwords ads?

I only read a case study from March 2013 where they quit buying ads for their BRAND name.

Is this all rumours or is there some real evidence that eBay quit using Adwords?

Sure, but that's not the point. As even the Supreme Court has ruled, Google can do whatever they want with their search results. Quality or no quality, Google gets to decide what quality is. IMO their "quality" guidelines are just meant to sell more ads.

The thing is: Ebay search results were 100% spam since like 3 years now.... other black hats raised this discussion here several times... it's often asked how come Ebay, Amazon and Tripadvisor and friends get to have 7 or 8 results in a 10 results page? I always suspected those results. If any small website did the same they'd be banned. But amazingly, Ebay, Amazon, Tripadvisor and several large brands get away with it. They still get away with it right now.

Then, strangely, Ebay cancels their adwords account and is penalized for "spam" less than two months later.

If a car salesman tries to sell you a car, you assume he's trying to sell you a car from the start. Not with Google! They sell ads, but somehow people still argue that they're doing what they're doing because they're "nice guys" and "do no evil"(WTF?). Google sells ads. Their business is based on ads, their shareholders want them to sell more ads. If you mess with their ad revenue, then your site "has zero quality". Ebay messed with Google's ad revenue big time, and this is the obvious response. It's so blatant.

I don't know about being respected or not. But here go some sources. You can probably find the original source from those(it's probably in the SEC filings).

Yes I know all those sources but there is a GAP of more then 1 year between eBay doing a brand case study on Adwords (that many also misinterpretated as it was only for their own name query for what I remember from last year) and the Panda 4.0 update.

What people do now? They act like eBay just got punished due to quit paying for Adwords, like it happened yesterday instead of more then a year ago.

So there is ZERO relation between eBay stopping with Adwords and tanking due to Panda 4.0 as there has been way too much time in between.

The point is that none of the big sites like Ebay,RetailMenot,GoDaddy,HostGator,Expedia,RapGenius is playing by Google's rules.
You pay for Adwords = You get away with whatever you do (in terms of SEO) and thats what exactly most of big sites (aka whitelisted sites) are doing.
