Hello, I am actually not an eBay newbie, as I have had a largely dormant account for 5 years, selling on and off, but I have yet to make significant profits. So in a sense I am in the same boat as many clueless newbies. And that's why I am making this post.

Some background: I have a business degree but unfortunately was never taught practical ways of making money. College is such a waste because you learn so much theory and the professors are there because if they were making real money they probably would not be teaching at a university. So in reading some of the success stories I am finding that some people either have a knack for making money or are directed in the right way somehow (internally it seems, usually).

Obviously if the successful shared all of their secrets their profits would shrink due to competition. So it is understandable that some posts giving advice are vague or seem largely self-congratulatory. With that said, I have some questions.

    1. I have struggled in finding the right product to sell on eBay. It seems whenever I come up with an idea (and I know, electronics are to be avoided because too many newbies jump on that ship) it seems saturated and that prices have been slashed so that it is impossible to make serious money. What tips do you have for finding the right product to sell (sourced from Alibaba, Liquidation.com, or wherever)? Is there a software that you recommend?

    2. Are there any resources that you recommend that are very specific in their advice? There is already too much vagueness, and some of it is understandable. I guess what I am asking for is a "for dummies" manual, website, ebook, whatever, that makes it simple and avoids mumbo-jumbo, empty self-promotion, or whatever else is useless.

    3. Are there groups or organizations that can help a clueless person such as myself, who desperately wants to make money?

    4. Is there really practical advice that can be offered, or must all posts be mysterious, leading the slightly less intuitive to nasty and frustrating dead-ends?

Any insights would be greatly appreciated. And I am sure I'm not the only frustrated person around here!

Most posts in the eBay section are helpful and are not vague. The idea to make money on eBay is simple, get a product at the cheapest price and try to sell it. Most people fail to realise the 9% or so eBay fee and the PayPal fee before deciding on a product to sell.

Rightly identified, everyone wants to sell on eBay and make money and they'll jump on to sell electronic items. There are many big time sellers buying in bulk therefore, getting the product at a low unit cost, hence, these items should be avoided for starters until you have a strong cash base to support bulk buying.

I started on eBay by selling those brands which no one had ever heard about and I was getting very low views. I started to play around with the titles, descriptions, adding pictures, changing prices and all the features until I figured out what works and what doesnt. Therefore, avoiding things that dont work. Experience is an important factor on eBay. Everyone wants to make quick money, fast money. I don't think anyone earns loads of money overnight. It will not happen that way. You need to be patient, learn from mistakes/losses and expand.

As per #2, I have always avoided all common sites that you mentioned. ( PM me and I'll give you the best resources possible ).

#3 PM me and i'll help you with eBay as much as I can.

#4, you need to read a lot of threads, useful information is spread here and there. You just need to find it all and then club it together = successful business strategy!

In 2011, december. I joined this wonderful forum, to be honest during that time I was in the same boat as yours. But since then I have met people who talk business, want business and are great people. Blackhatworld is the best forum. If you stick around here, in no time you will reach your ultimate goal. Just make sure whenever you have a question don't hesitate to ask.

Thanks for your response. It's good to hear that legitimate people are around here who were in the same situation as myself and have made it. I will browse some threads and see if I pick up some ideas, and will probably PM you some time.

In the meantime, I am open to feedback from others.

    Hi eBayer,

I saw your generous offer help and advice to beginner ebayers and would like to ask for your help as well. I have only sold one thing on ebay in my life, and that was just to get rid of it. Now, I would like to be able to make a small profit (at least enough to pay my internet bill every month) and would appreciate it if you could help me along the way. I can't PM you as I have a low post count, but would really appreciate it if you took me under your wing. Thanks so much!

At a first step get yourself Terapeak. This little tool is worth gold. Then move away from electronics. Try to find niches where brand names are not important to buyers. Once you have identified these niches spy out the products your potential competitors sell. You should be able to come up with at least 10 great products very quickly.

    GOOD advice.
There are also certain websites which allow you to know the number of watchers on any item. The higher the number of watchers, the more people want that product.

GoofBay is one of the tool. I can't find the other tools in my bookmark where you can see the top products with most watchers in all categories. That surely helped me find the best niches possible. This is what I have noticed, people who approached me to get them supplies from China, whenever I eBayed that item. Those were the items that had the most potential profits and under thorough examination, those items tend to have huge number of watchers and a faster sales turnover rate.

I would also suggest at times, you should also conduct manual market research and use your instincts to determine if this item can make you a killer profits or not.

    Hello eBayer,

I hope it's not yet crowded with people asking for your help...I'm also planning to enter ebay thru dropshipping, still don't know where to turn to & where to start. I'll be reading through the ebay threads here just like you advised. Hope you can add me on the list that you wanna help because I think I really need it.

I was earlier planning to join SaleHoo, I read that it's a great place to start. What's your thought on this, many thanks man.

    Ebayer,

I hope you're not getting annoyed, but, I'm having trouble finding good wholesalers and I don't know where to look anymore.

I have looked at goofbay but there is no popularly watched items, I use HammerTap for research, is there anyway to get a list of all items that sell close to 100% of the time with HammerTap? or atleast the most popular. I can only search specific catagories with hammertap but not all of ebay which kind of sucks compared to TeraPeak.

watchcount.com is also a good site, this is a better site than goofbay and it can show you all items in a particular category with most bids/watches and then you could try to fetch these items and sell.
